PM O'Neill Warns ABG To Be Weary Of Outside Influence
*************************************************************************

PC Online

The Government has declared the Bougainville referendum a major agenda for this year but with a warning that there may be interference from outside.

While not specifying the intrusion, the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said yesterday it would likely entail “misinformation” which he warned Bougainvilleans to be wary of.

Mr O’Neill said this when expressing the government’s eagerness in advancing discussions and awareness during the lead up to the June 19, 2019 referendum date.

He said communication was essential for everyone in Bougainville and the nation to be aware of the issues at hand and the important process involved.

“Our government has demonstrated that we are fully committed to implementing the Bougainville Peace Agreement that includes the upcoming referendum,” the Prime Minister said.

“The referendum is another step forward from the troubles that began in the 1980s and we will continue to improve the lives of our people in Bougainville.

“It is important that the process ahead of the referendum is transparent and properly undertaken in the interests of all Papua New Guineans.

“Our most important objective from all of this is to ensure that the people of Bougainville are able to enjoy the quality of life that we aspire for all Papua New Guineans.”

Mr O’Neill then warned that people must be on alert for misinformation, particularly from people looking to gain at the expense of the people of Bougainville.

“Awareness must be conducted so that all people in Bougainville understand the issues at hand, and are clear in their own minds how they see the future of Bougainville.

“I expect there will be some individuals and groups from outside Papua New Guinea, who have no official role, that will seek to interfere and misinform for their own gain. This is a concern, and I hope all of our people in Bougainville are aware of these groups.”

Mr O’Neill said he is looking forward to the role of Bertie Ahern, the former Prime Minister of Ireland, who has been appointed by the Joint Supervisory Body as Chair of the Bougainville Referendum Commission.

“As Ireland’s Prime Minister for a decade, Mr Ahern was deeply involved in the successful negotiations between parties to bring about peace in Northern Ireland.

“Mr Ahern has since been involved in facilitating peace in areas such as the Ukraine, Nigeria, Iran, Turkey, and the Basque Country.

“His appointment is from the Bougainville Referendum Commission and his experience and independence is greatly respected.

“This is a very important year for Bougainville, and we look forward to the Bougainville Referendum Commission continuing to make steady progress.”

THEME: MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE
READINGS: Exodus 16:2-4, 12-15, 31 / Ephesians 4:17, 20-24/ John 6:24-35
18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

God, according to the first reading, provided manna for the hungry Israelites as they journeyed to the Promised Land (Exodus 16:13-15). Despite this and other provisions which God made for His people, they sometimes disobeyed Him. Hence, as the Israelites neared the Promised Land and knowing their tendency to disobey God, Moses reminded them that more important than material satisfaction is obedience to the God of Providence:

Every commandment which I command you today you must be careful to observe …. And you shall remember that the Lord your God … allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna …that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord (Deut. 8:1-3; NKJV).

In simple terms, Moses reminded his people that obedience to the Lord God who provided for their needs is paramount in every circumstance.

Centuries later, after His forty days and nights of fasting, when Jesus Christ was tempted to turn stones into bread, He responded with the above words of Scripture: ‘man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’ (Matt. 4:4).

Now, if He, who did not turn stones into bread to feed Himself, did multiply loaves to feed the thousands of people, then like His Father who fed the Israelites of old, Jesus Christ had a message beyond the satisfaction of the physical hunger of the crowd.

Jesus was using the attraction of the physical miracle to call attention to the spiritual miracle of eternal life – the miracle by which human beings have access to the heavenly life that angels enjoy in God’s presence for eternity.

Thus, Jesus came not so much to satisfy our physical hunger but to satisfy the deeper hunger of our souls – our souls hunger to live with God forever.

That is why Jesus told the crowd who were looking for Him:

I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you understood the miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. … The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. …I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry (John 6:26-35).

Let us explain this message further: Firstly, man shall not live on physical bread alone, because this kind of bread perishes in no time and so souls which depend on it alone have limited life.

Secondly, on the other hand, man shall live by the Word of God which has no expiry date; it is eternal and it makes souls live eternally.

Thirdly, Jesus Christ is the eternal Word of God made flesh to live among us. In other words, He is the Bread that has come down from heaven to give us life without end.

Fourthly, as physical bread (food) satisfies our hunger and gives us strength and joy, so Jesus Christ (the Bread of life) is our spiritual satisfaction, strength and joy.

Moreover, Jesus gives us far more than we obtain from physical food. That is, whereas physical food perishes, Jesus, the Bread of life, lives forever. Again, while physical food nourishes only our bodies (which are short-lived), Jesus nourishes our souls (which are eternal). And, whereas physical food is no longer useful at our death, Jesus feeds us beyond the grave!

To conclude, then, Jesus wants us to understand and believe that nothing else (material or spiritual) can truly satisfy us and give us everlasting joy, except He Himself. With St. Augustine, therefore, let us pray: ‘O God, you have made us for yourself, and our souls are restless, until they rest in you.’ May our souls rest in the Lord always. Amen!

Cheaper homes from Rhodes
*******************************

Families can own nice homes for up to 60 per cent less than the maximum government sanctioned loan amount of K400,000 guaranteed under Bank South Pacific’s First Home Ownership Scheme with Rhodes PNG.

“We can supply families with our durable, steel-framed homes at very affordable prices from K58,270 for a 2 bedroom home and K84,050 for a 3 bedroom home,” said Rhodes project coordinator Geno Ulu.
Rhodes PNG is now on BSP’s ‘approved builders’ list. This means that families who have been waiting to buy one of Rhodes’ quality and affordable homes can now qualify for loans.

Through the Government’s first home ownership scheme, families can borrow up to K400,000 from BSP for over 40 years at a minimal repayment interest of 4percent.
“There’s no need to borrow the maximum amount of K400,000 under the First Home Ownership Scheme (FHOS) for a Rhodes’ home though,” says Mr Ulu.
According to Mr Ulu, irrespective of where families live in PNG, through Rhodes extensive logistics network, the prefabricated specialist can pack and deliver kit homes anywhere in the country.
Mr Ulu also mentioned that Rhodes’ specialised building systems are specially designed for ease of handling and assembling.

“You don’t have to be a builder or a carpenter to put a Rhodes kit home together” explains Mr Ulu “and our assembly instructions are in diagrams rather than words so literacy is not a problem either. However, if you’d prefer us to build your home for you we offer a full turn-key service too.”
Rhodes has been advocating on behalf of home buyers for the last two years and educating them on how to avoid buying sub-standard homes and low-quality building products that are increasingly available, particularly in Port Moresby and Lae.

“The home buying market is turning to Rhodes because they trust us to build quality and affordable homes” says Rhodes GM, David Cusick, who was a guest presenter at the recent HausPles Real Estate Show.
“What our BSP ‘Approved Builder’ status means is that families now have even greater peace of mind. They know that when they buy a Rhodes’ home, they buy an affordable and quality steel-framed home that will last them a lifetime.”
