DESIGN INSIGHT: Natural Light & Passive Cooling in Compact Homes
Small homes benefit the most from thoughtful architectural decisions.
This 40 sqm rowhouse with a loft underwent a simple but meaningful renovation: the installation of a large dormer window above the main living space.
The goal was not only to introduce more daylight, but to improve air movement and thermal comfort inside the house.
The dormer window created several improvements:
β’ Increased daylight pe*******on β natural light now reaches deeper into the living area.
β’ Higher interior air volume β the expanded roof space allows hot air to rise and dissipate.
β’ Improved air circulation β better airflow contributes to passive cooling, especially during hot midday periods.
β’ Reduced reliance on artificial lighting β interior lights are rarely needed until sunset.
In compact homes, light and air are not luxuries β they are essential design elements that directly affect livability.
Sometimes, a single architectural adjustment can significantly improve how a space feels throughout the day.
At LeftHand Design Workshop, we approach small residential projects with the belief that careful planning can make even modest spaces comfortable, efficient, and enjoyable to live in.
