To have a healthy and active turtle. Essential things are needed to have this long-term companions by your side.
1. Enclosure Set-up๐
- Red eared slider are aquatic turtles, their habitat should have more water area than the land area. They are great swimmers and thrive more on swimming than being on land.
โข Follow the rule 10 gallon per 1 inch of turtle shell
- UV light and heat lamp are needed to maintain a durable and healthy shell. Without a proper vitamin D, turtle shell will soften and eventually lead to diseases and weak turtles.
โข A must have proper basking platform
- Maintain the cleanliness of the water. Red eared slider are very messy eaters so having a good aquarium filter and removing left over food is important to avoid shell infection and diseases.
โข Water change 2-3x a week
- Water temperature should be warm. For hatchling: 25-27 Celsius, while for adult: 24-26 Celsius. NEVER put the turtles to cold water.
โข Warm temperature is needed for an active turtle
2. Diet๐ฅ
- Red eared slider are omnivores. They consume both plant and animal material. Red eared slider needs to have a balance diet because having to much of the other could lead to serious diseases so having a variety of foods are a must have.
โข Main Foods ( For Daily Intake)
- Commercial Pellets + Leafy Green
โข Occational ( For treats )
-Proteins like dried shrimp (kalkag) or dried fish.
Good Leafy Greens:
1. Kangkong (Water Spinach)
2. Pechay (Chinese Cabbage)
3. Malunggay (Moringga Leaves)
4. Sweet Potato Leaves
Bad Leafy Greens:
1. Iceberg Lettuce- low nutrion
2. Spinach- cointains oxalates that blocks calcium
3. Cabbage- can feed occasionally
Simple Feeding Idea:
50-70% greens + 20-30% Pellets + 10-20% protein
Health Tips:โ๏ธ
If symptoms like;
โข Soft shell
โข Swollen eyes
โข Lack of energy/not actively swimming
- it may be due to lack of nutrients and dirty water. This is a serious case and need an action immediately
If symptoms like;
โข Not eating in the first 3-7 days after arriving to you
โข Always hiding and running away
- then rest assured that it is normal. Turtles need time and space to adjust in a new environment. Give it time to adjust, avoid handling and force feeding.
