π₯ WHAT IS FIRE?
Fire is not a substanceβit is a chemical reaction called combustion.
Combustion occurs when fuel, oxygen, and enough heat come together. These three elements form the Fire Triangle. Remove any one of them, and the fire cannot continue to burn.
π₯ Heat can be reduced by cooling the fire with water when appropriate.
π¨ Oxygen can be limited by smothering the fire with a fire blanket, foam, carbon dioxide (COβ), or by closing a door to reduce the air supply in some situations.
πͺ΅ Fuel can be removed by shutting off a gas supply or moving nearby combustible materials when it is safe to do so.
Understanding the Fire Triangle helps explain how fires start, spread, and how they can be extinguished safely. However, the correct extinguishing method depends on the type of fire. Using the wrong extinguishing agentβsuch as water on a grease fire or certain energized electrical firesβcan make the situation more dangerous.
π Fire prevention starts with understanding how fire works. The more we know, the better we can protect our homes, workplaces, and communities.
