2nd Startup and Innovation Congress 2026
“Innovation in Action: Transforming Data-Driven Industries, Empowering People”
March 18–19, 2026 | FSUU CBE Function Hall

The halls of Father Saturnino Urios University came alive with ideas, innovation, and inspiration as it successfully hosted the 2nd Startup and Innovation Congress 2026 on March 18–19, 2026. Anchored on the theme “Innovation in Action: Transforming Data-Driven Industries, Empowering People,” the congress brought together 170 students, faculty members, innovators, and aspiring entrepreneurs from across Region XIII – Caraga. It became more than just an event—it was a movement toward building a more innovative, inclusive, and future-ready region.

Day 1 of the congress opened with a powerful sense of purpose through the preliminaries led by the Voices of Light Chorale, followed by the inspiring opening remarks of Dr. Arlyn M. Floreta, FSUU Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, who emphasized the university’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and innovation as pillars of nation-building.

Rev. Fr. Randy Jasper C. Odchigue, University President, highlighted in his rationale that innovation must be rooted in service—designed not only for progress, but for people, communities, and sustainable impact.

The keynote message by Rev. Fr. John Christian U. Young, the former President of Father Saturnino Urios University and Chairman of the Board of the FSUU Foundation resonated deeply as he underscored the importance of creativity in our daily lives to create meaningful and lasting impact.

One of the highlights of the morning was the session of Mr. Giorgio Armani Magno, the Senior Data Specialist and the Founder of the Startup “JuanderGo”, on “AI and Data for Development: Smart Solutions for Local Industries.” His talk emphasized how artificial intelligence and data analytics are no longer exclusive to global corporations but are now powerful tools accessible to local industries. He encouraged participants to harness data as a strategic asset—transforming raw information into insights that can solve real-world problems, improve efficiency, and create competitive advantages for local enterprises.

This was complemented by Mr. Kakui Kintanar Araral, the Community Management Unit Head of BenildeHIFI TBI, who delivered a compelling discussion on “Social Enterprises: Balancing Profit and Purpose.” His message reinforced that sustainable enterprises are those that create value not only economically, but also socially and environmentally—ensuring long-term impact.

In the afternoon, Mr. Rex Rubens Z. Fernandez, Co-Owner of RedPeach Lasercut and Print, discussed “Digital Transformation for MSMEs & Local Enterprise,” stressing that digitalization is no longer optional but essential. He shared how MSMEs can leverage digital tools—from marketing platforms to data systems—to scale operations, reach wider markets, and remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy.

The discussion on “SMART and Sustainable Cities” by Hon. Lawrence Lemuel H. Fortun, represented by Engr. Jake Bonn Dumpasan, Assistant City Planning and Development Coordinator of the City Government of Butuan, provided a governance perspective, illustrating how innovation can be integrated into urban planning. He emphasized the role of startups in contributing to smarter cities—through solutions in transportation, sustainability, and public services—demonstrating that local government units and innovators must work hand in hand.

Further enriching the conversation, Engr. John Edrick E. Coroza, RME, of the Department of Science and Techonoloy - PCIEERD - Research Information and Technology Transfer Division tackled “Bridging R&D to Market,” offering valuable insights into what investors look for in emerging startups. He stressed that innovation must be market-oriented, scalable, and grounded in real needs. His session challenged participants to think beyond ideas and focus on ex*****on, validation, and sustainability.

The day concluded with a global perspective from Ms. Watcharin Witthayaweerasak, the Director of Thailand Business Incubators and Science Parks Association (Thai BISPA) who shared “Inclusive Innovation in Action.” Drawing from Thailand’s experiences, she highlighted the importance of building startup ecosystems that are inclusive, community-driven, and collaborative. Her talk inspired participants to see innovation as a shared journey, not an individual pursuit.

Day 2 opened with Engr. Emma Liam Prisco of the Department of Science and Technology Region 13, led a meaningful discussion on “Green and Circular Economy Startups,” emphasizing that sustainability is the future of innovation. He highlighted how startups can adopt circular models—reducing waste, maximizing resources, and creating environmentally responsible solutions that align with global sustainability goals.

Returning to the stage, Mr. Giorgio Armani Magno conducted a session on “Introduction to PyTorch,” providing participants with foundational knowledge on AI frameworks. This session bridged theory and practice, empowering participants with technical skills essential for developing intelligent systems and solutions.

A significant highlight was the panel on “Innovation and Policy Insights,” moderated by Mr. Dean Joshua Solis of the Department of Information and Communications Technology. The panel featured Ms. Brenda B. Corvera, Assistant Regional Director of the Department of Trade and Industry, along with representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, including Engr. Emma Liam Prisco and Ms. Rhea Bete. The discussion underscored the critical role of policies and institutional support in strengthening the startup ecosystem, emphasizing that innovation thrives in enabling environments supported by strong partnerships and government initiatives.

In the afternoon, Ms. April Mae V. Ong Vaño, head of Environment, Social and Governance of Quest Ventures, delivered an impactful talk on “Success Metrics and Investment Readiness Level Assessment for Startups.” She provided practical frameworks for evaluating startup performance and readiness for investment, encouraging participants to adopt data-driven decision-making and measurable growth strategies.

The much-anticipated Tech Application Pitching Competition showcased the creativity, passion, and ingenuity of participants. It was a powerful demonstration of how ideas can be transformed into viable solutions that address real-world challenges.

The congress culminated with the awarding of winners and closing remarks by Engr. Zenaida B. Azura, FSUU Vice President for Administrative and Student Affairs, who emphasized the importance of continuing the journey of innovation beyond the event—turning knowledge into action and ideas into impact.

The 2-day event was hosted by Ms. Jeanin Fabe and Mr. John Adaya both from Father Saturnino Urios University - Morelos Campus.

The success of the 2nd Startup and Innovation Congress stands as a strong testament to the power of collaboration and a shared commitment to innovation. We extend our sincere gratitude to the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) for their invaluable support in advancing innovation and entrepreneurship. We likewise express our heartfelt appreciation to the FSUU Administrators for their guidance, valuable insights, and steadfast support, which made the successful implementation of this activity possible.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the participating schools—Agusan National High School, Caraga State University – Main Campus, Caraga State University – Cabadbaran Campus, Saint Michael College of Caraga, Butuan City Colleges, Inc., Father Saturnino Urios University (Morelos and Main Campus), Philippine Electronics and Communication Institute of Technology (PECIT), Northeastern Mindanao State University (NEMSU), Libertad National High School, Northern Mindanao Colleges, Inc. (NORMI), and Butuan City School of Arts and Trades—for their commitment and active participation in this event.

Their engagement fostered a dynamic exchange of ideas and strengthened collaboration among institutions across the region. We also commend the entire working committee—from organizers and facilitators to the technical teams and utilities—whose dedication and hard work ensured the seamless and successful conduct of this meaningful event.

More than just a gathering, the 2nd Startup and Innovation Congress served as a catalyst for change. It reminded everyone that innovation is not confined to laboratories or boardrooms—it thrives wherever there is curiosity, collaboration, and a desire to make a difference.

As participants return to their respective institutions and communities, they carry with them not just knowledge, but inspiration and responsibility—to innovate, to lead, and to transform.

Indeed, innovation is no longer just an idea—it is action.
