The Quality of Mercy

"And now, I beseech thee, let the power of my Lord be great, according as thou hast spoken, saying, The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation. Pardon, I beseech thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of thy mercy, and as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now" (Numbers 14:17-19).

The mercy that we show to others is based on the mercy that God first shows to us. The forgiveness that we receive from Him is not given because we deserve it. When Moses prayed for God to not destroy the Israelites after their refusal to enter the Promised Land, he appealed to His mercy rather than justice. That is what we need from God for ourselves, and that is what others need from us as well. We do not have to insist on getting even or getting revenge. We can extend mercy even to those who have harmed or disappointed us.

Today's Growth Principle:

We show God's character and nature when we show mercy to others.

Overcoming Deception

"And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:" - 2 Thessalonians 2:8-11

The devil has been using deception and delusion effectively for thousands of years. And while lost people have no means of identifying and resisting his lies, we have the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to give us the tools to see and recognize the difference between truth and error. It is vital that we do that so that we do not yield to temptation. We need to know how Satan works so that we can overcome him. “Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices” (2 Corinthians 2:11). Rather than believing anything we see or hear, we need to cultivate discernment and weigh what is presented to us. The best way to detect a lie is to know the truth so well that it is quickly apparent. The way to know the truth is to fill our minds with the Bible.

Perfect Peace

"In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:" (Isaiah 26:1-4)

Isaiah's ministry occurred in a time when the kingdom of Judah was facing grave threats. It was during the reign of Hezekiah that the northern kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrians, and the Assyrians had their sights set on Jerusalem next. In fact the Assyrian king Sennacherib planned to destroy Judah, but God intervened and miraculously delivered the people. “And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went out, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians an hundred fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses” (2 Kings 19:35).

Yet despite all the threats facing God's chosen people, Isaiah encouraged them to trust in God and live in peace. The world's idea is that we can have peace when we are in good health, when there is plenty of money in the bank, when our jobs are secure, and when there are no threats on the horizon. Because we live in a fallen world, we are not likely to experience this kind of prosperity in every area of life for long, if we ever experience it at all.

God's love and care and provision for us are not a guarantee that nothing will ever go wrong. They are a guarantee that if we are willing to trust His plan over our own ideas, we can live in peace no matter what is going on around us. The Lord strengthens and empowers those who choose to turn to Him for help rather than allowing worry to fill their minds, and He gives peace that cannot be explained. “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7).

Today's Growth Principle:

If our hearts are fixed on God, no circumstances will be able to take away our peace.

"Go On Praying"

"I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened." - Luke 11:8-10

The Lord has given us many things to encourage us as we live and work for Him. We have the benefit of the completed and perfect Word of God to show us His purpose and plan. We have other believers around us to encourage, counsel, comfort, and sometimes correct us. We have the church to provide both fellowship and instruction. But the crucial thing that does the most to keep us going is our prayer life, and if we are not faithful to pray—and keep on praying even when the answer is delayed—we are likely to give up. “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint” (Luke 18:1).

Continued prayer encourages us not to give up, because it is an ongoing expression of our dependence on God. If we stop praying after a day or a week or even a year, we are declaring that we do not believe God can or will do what is needed. We would never say that out loud, but that is what our lack of consistent praying says. George Müller observed, “The great fault of the children of God is, they do not continue in prayer; they do not go on praying; they do not persevere. If they desire anything for God’s glory, they should pray until they get it.” Unless God directly closes the door, we should never stop praying. Instead, we should believe that in His time and according to His plan He will work, and we will trust Him no matter how long it takes.

The Unfailing Source

"Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?" - Matthew 6:25-26

There is certainly nothing wrong with making wise plans for the future, but the reality is that none of us really know what the future holds. The things we think are permanent and stable may turn out to be fleeting instead. But there is something we can always count on. God never loses His ability to see and respond to our needs because He never changes. “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed” (Malachi 3:6). Even the natural world around us points us to God's loving provision for lives. We should trust Him rather than trusting in anything we have for our security, because He has promised to meet our needs.

Something Worth Having

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." - Philippians 2:5-8

As a general rule, people do not steal things unless they have value. Their desire for something leads them to do something that is wrong in order to obtain it.

Jesus had something that was of incredible value—His place in Heaven as God—and yet He not only did not seek to retain it, but willingly laid it aside. He had every right to retain His glory, and yet He made a different choice because of His great love for us. “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). In the same way that Jesus was willing to sacrifice and even suffer for us, we must be willing to do the same for the sake of others. Only then are we living with the mind of Christ.

Putting Away Lying

"And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Therefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth." - Ephesians 4:24-28

" Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight” (Proverbs 12:22). The Christian should be—must be—known for honesty and truthfulness. We owe it to others and to God to tell the truth, even if in the short term it seems like a lie would make things easier. The priority of honesty in our dealings with other people must have greater value to us than any benefit we might think we will receive from telling a lie. Our God is completely honest, and we must be as well. “In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began” (Titus 1:2).

Listening In

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."- Matthew 12:34-36

Many times we feel like no one is listening to us, but the reality is that God both hears and measures everything we say. One day we will give an account to Him for how we used our words. Many people are harsh, critical, or careless in the way that they speak to or about others, and this can cause great injury to relationships and to people's hearts. There is great power in our words, and it is critical that they are right. “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer" (Psalm 19:14).

07/02/2025

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. - Romans 3:23-26

Jesus fulfilled both the sacrifice and the priest roles on the cross for us. He is both the sacrifice and the priest who offers it. His blood pays the price of our sins, and His sacrifice is the measure of His love for us.

We must never forget the love of God that paid the high price for our salvation.
