OCTOBER IS ADHD AWARENESS MONTH

THE City Health Office (CHO) called on the public to support families with children afflicted with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as the world observes ADHD Awareness Month this October.

The CHO said ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting brain development and function, involving differences in attention, executive functioning, and self-regulation in both children and adults.

Symptoms usually begin before age 12 and vary per person, encompassing inattention, hyperactivity or restlessness, impulsivity, and executive dysfunction challenges like planning, organizing, and managing time.

Looking beyond stereotypes, the observance clarifies that ADHD is NOT simply laziness, lack of discipline, ‘bad behavior,’ being ‘too energetic,’ or easy distraction, nor stems from poor parenting or something children outgrow.

Calling on the community to learn, understand, and support, the CHO encourages families, schools, workplaces, and communities to hold open conversations, foster inclusion, and recognize the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals, building an empowering environment where those with ADHD can thrive. CAGAYAN de Oro City Hall under Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy’s administration joined the annual observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month through a Pink Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, October 8, at 6:00 PM at the Executive Building of City Hall.
