The Department of Energy (DOE) is moving to suspend around 40 underperforming and non-compliant power plants, mainly small diesel-fired units, as part of efforts to ease persistent grid strain in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The DOE will recommend the suspensions to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), while also pushing renewable energy and battery storage projects to replace aging diesel generators in off-grid areas.
