Reaffirming Ethnography for Sustainable Tourism is out now in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

This special issue brings tourism research closer to the worlds it studies: people, places, animals, dark skies, snow, protected areas, museums, livelihoods, land, power, and care.

Across the issue, ethnography becomes more than a method. It becomes a way of noticing what sustainability can miss when it is measured only from a distance.

Tourism pressure in the Galápagos is only the surface
Underneath are deeper issues: fragmented governance, weak local benefit, poor communication, and competing ideas about what growth should mean. Moving beyond growth starts by seeing the whole system.

👋 Don't miss our for Members ‘'EmpCo Directive (EU) 2024/825: What Tourism Sector Actors Need to Know.’’

Sustainability claims in tourism are legally highly sensitive and frequently subject to enforcement. As of 27 September 2026, the requirements will become significantly stricter under the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive.

What does this mean in practice for tourism companies, service providers, and destinations? Which sustainability claims will remain permissible – and which will no longer be allowed?

In this focused expert session, Marie Vandersanden will present the new EmpCo rules and their practical implications for the tourism sector, including:
• Compliant use of environmental claims (“green”, “climate neutral”, etc.)
• Treatment of carbon offsetting and communication of environmental initiatives
• Requirements for sustainability labels and valid certification schemes
• Initial implications for green brand strategy and intellectual property rights

These rules affect tourism sector actors worldwide: companies and destinations outside the EU are equally impacted when marketing to EU consumers. Early review and adaptation of sustainability communication will be crucial to remain competitive and legally compliant.

Following the presentation, there will be an extended Q&A session, allowing GSTC members to ask detailed questions, share experiences, and gain practical insights from peers.

GSTC will act as a neutral convener. Please note this session is intended for professional exchange and does not constitute legal advice.

Special 90-minute session with in-depth legal briefing + interactive discussion for GSTC Members.

👥 Speakers:
• Marie Vandersanden, LL.M., Attorney at Law, Founder & Managing Partner (TourismLawyers), University Lecturer on international Tourism and Competition Law (University of Bremenn and Universität Wien)

Tourism can make places easier to visit while also making them feel less like themselves.
This paper introduces a new way to measure that shift through tourists’ eyes: the Tourism Gentrification through Tourists’ Eyes (TPTGS). Across non-Western historic destinations, the pattern is clear: more convenience and stronger revisit intention can come with weaker authenticity, a softer destination image, and visible pressure on local space, governance, and the environment.
