IMPEACHMENT VOTING DAY

Today is the day many Filipinos have been waiting for — the day more than 100 congressmen will cast their vote on whether the impeachment case against VP Sara Duterte will move forward to the Senate. For ordinary citizens, this may look like a simple YES or NO decision. But for every congressman who will stand inside the plenary hall today, this is one of the hardest political decisions they may ever face in their career. This is not just voting. This is a decision that can change alliances, careers, reputations, and even the future of their districts.

For those who will vote YES, many believe it simply means they are doing their constitutional duty as lawmakers. An impeachment vote does not automatically mean someone is guilty. It only means there are serious accusations that deserve to be investigated properly by the Senate. For many Filipinos, a YES vote means they do not tolerate corruption, abuse of public funds, threats against public officials, bribery accusations, and possible violations of the law regardless of who the person is. It is a statement that no one should be above the law — whether an ordinary citizen or the second highest official of the country. Many also believe that this process gives VP Sara Duterte the opportunity to answer all allegations against her and prove her innocence before the Filipino people.

But for those who will vote NO, many people also understand the difficult political reality behind that decision. In Philippine politics, going against the administration can have very serious consequences. Some congressmen may fear losing support, losing access to national budgets, or being politically isolated. Without budget allocations, a congressman may struggle to bring projects to their district — hospitals, roads, bridges, classrooms, medicines, financial assistance, salaries for workers, and many other services that directly help the people. Some may even fear political attacks, investigations, disqualification attempts, or losing future opportunities in public service. Whether people agree or disagree with that reality, it is something many politicians silently think about before making decisions like this.

As ordinary citizens, it is easy for us to criticize from the outside. It is easy to type comments online, attack people on social media, or immediately call someone a traitor or corrupt based only on one vote. But inside that plenary hall today are elected officials carrying not only their personal beliefs, but also the pressure of politics, public opinion, their supporters, their families, and the future of the districts they represent. Whatever side they choose today, one thing is certain — this vote will become part of Philippine history, and the Filipino people will remember where every congressman stood during one of the most controversial and difficult political moments of this generation.
