🔥 Pyrolysis — what happens before the flames?

A solid fuel like wood doesn’t simply “catch fire.” When enough heat reaches the material, it begins to chemically break down through a process called pyrolysis.

As the material heats, pyrolysis releases gases and vapors. Some of these products are combustible. When they mix with enough oxygen and conditions are hot enough for ignition, flaming combustion can occur.

Think of it simply:

🔥 Heat → Pyrolysis → Fuel gases/vapors → Possible ignition

Pyrolysis can also continue after flames appear because the fire keeps transferring heat to nearby fuel, causing more material to break down and contribute to fire growth.

đźš’ For firefighters: Understanding pyrolysis helps explain why materials can become involved even before direct flame contact. Heat itself can prepare the fuel to burn.
