Artists Welfare Project Inc. (AWPI) is an artists’ initiative, community action, collaboration, education and empowerment organisation. Realising the lack of creating support mechanisms by government and private institutions, there was a coming together of artists from various disciplines who knew that collectively, they can improve their lot and live a dignified life. It is formed by the artists community with the support of friends from various sectors who realise that the wellbeing and development of artists correspond, in many ways, to the wellbeing and overall development of the country. It pursues the recognition of the artist as a professional and productive citizen. AWPI is a non-profit, non-stock, non-government organisation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 2007. It is currently headed by its Board of Directors: President Carmela Manuel Millado, Vice President Ronnie Lazaro, Chairperson Fernando “Nanding” Josef, Vice Chairperson Simoun Balboa, Secretary Dennis Marasigan, and Treasurer Lisa Macuja Elizalde. GERI MATTHEW CARRETERO

How do images translate the concepts of continuity of daily life of informal settlers beyond their living conditions in the context of displacement, dislocation, migration and urban decay?
Painting and Photography are main expressions that capture the movement or passage of people and their living conditions. As a method of documentation, painting and photography are also oftentimes conducted for enquiry of unmediated chance accounts and random experiences in public spaces.
Everyday we are confronted by overcrowded places such as buildings, fences, tents, and other spaces of containment or restriction or strangers and countless bodies arranged in assembly lines, often running and walking in a hurry. In my works, these are representations of the displacement, dislocation and ephemerality/temporality of the same images taken by the artist which are dialogues between the artist, people and spaces. These dialogues are grounded on the exploration on the idea of continuity, movement of getting to and out of places, of identities in space and spaces of identities in the context of displacement, dislocation, migration and urban decay.
Throughout its history, visual art has played an important role in documenting the movement of people in terms of portraying their plight, the objects they bring with them, what identities they adopted themselves while on their journey, and what kind of geographical and cultural borders they are crossing or occupying. Images of continuity of daily life of informal settlers beyond their living conditions in the context of displacement, dislocation, migration and urban decay were found to be well represented in my work.
Thus, art having a very broad spectrum in art practice and serving as apparatus of documenting the everyday lives of people, shows that there is more than romanticizing displacement and poverty and that there still dignity even in poverty.
