Early signs of labor

* Lightening โ€“ The baby drops lower into the pelvis, making it easier to breathe but increasing pelvic pressure.
* Loss of the mucus plug โ€“ You may notice a thick, jelly-like discharge that can be clear, pink, or slightly bloody (โ€œbloody showโ€).
* Regular contractions โ€“ Contractions become stronger, longer, and closer together. Unlike Braxton Hicks contractions, they do not go away with rest or hydration.
* Lower back pain and cramping โ€“ Persistent backache or menstrual-like cramps.

Active labor signs

* Water breaking โ€“ A gush or a steady trickle of fluid from the va**na after the amniotic sac ruptures.
* Contractions every 3โ€“5 minutes โ€“ Each lasting about 45โ€“60 seconds and becoming increasingly intense.
* Cervical dilation and effacement โ€“ The cervix opens and thins, which can only be confirmed by a healthcare provider.
* Increasing pelvic pressure โ€“ A strong urge to bear down may occur as labor progresses.

When to go to the birthing center

Contact your healthcare provider or go to the hospital if:

* Your contractions are 5 minutes apart, lasting 1 minute each, for at least 1 hour (or follow your providerโ€™s instructions).
* Your water breaks, even if you are not having contractions.
* You have heavy va**nal bleeding.
* You notice decreased or no fetal movement.
* You have severe pain, fever, severe headache, blurred vision, or other concerning symptoms.

If youโ€™re already close to your due date or think you might be in labor, itโ€™s always a good idea to contact your OB-GYN or maternity clinic for guidance.
