Prayer flags hang by the entrance of the DLSU-D Center for Heritage Conservation as we conclude the three month stay of the first batch of our monk scholars Lopen Namgay and Lopen Sonam.

We did not expect so many students and visitors to come to the thangka exhibition. Thank you very much to Museo De La Salle, the DLSU-D administrators, the CPAR and Arts & Design Track students from DLSU-D Basic Education, the Buddhist Studies students from Guang Ming College-Cavite, and our guests from Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies, as well as the reinas from the Elegante Runway Fashion Show, for visiting and appreciating this exhibition.

18th Century Buddhist Painting Restoration
Wednesday, December 10, 2025
3:00-6:00 pm
DLSU-D Center for Heritage Conservation

Three significant Buddhist paintings have been restored by our Bhutanese monk scholars under the supervision of De La Salle University Dasmariñas Center for Heritage Conservation.

This special exhibition highlights Sakyamuni Buddha and his transformative journey as Siddhartha, the First and Second Karmapa from the 11th Century representing the profound lineage of the Kagyu tradition, and Dorje Drolöd, one of the eight fierce and protective manifestations of Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche)

These restored thangkas offer a rare opportunity to encounter sacred art, history, and spiritual lineage brought back to life through meticulous conservation.

❗Photography of the thangkas is not permitted, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Central Monastic Body of Bhutan

The art of preserving 🇯🇵 cultural heritage 🎨🖌️

On 17 November 2025, Japan Information and Culture Center (JICC) Director MATSUDA Shigehiro attended an exhibition featuring a Japanese historical artifact at the Museo De La Salle in Dasmariñas City. The event was attended by De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) President Br. Iñigo Riola and Filipino art conservator Mr. Ephraim “Eddie” Jose.

The exhibition’s centerpiece showcased a restored 17th century Japanese folding screen or Byobu (屏風). 🖼️ ✨ Depicting a pivotal event in Japan’s history, the twelve-panel screen is a valuable traditional treasure that holds deep cultural significance. Its full restoration took over two years, making it a significant milestone in Philippine art and heritage conservation, as it is the first in the country and in Southeast Asia. 🇵🇭

The Embassy of Japan would like to congratulate De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Center for Heritage Conservation for this remarkable achievement and successful event. おめでとうございます!👏

The museo will exhibit the restored 17th century 12 panel Japanese folding screen, "Sekigahara Battlefield Flag Regalia".

The pivotal Battle of Sekigahara changed the course of Japanese history, from waring states to a peaceful and unified Japan.

It took a little over two years to fully restore this important artwork.

This is a major achievement for De La Salle University Center for Heritage Conservation in Dasmarinas Cavite. The first time an Important Japanese Cultural Property to be restored in the Philippines and in Southeast Asia.

Please join us to celebrate this milestone
Monday afternoon, November 17, 2025.
Time: 3:00 to 6:00 PM
Place: Museo De La Salle Dasmarinas Cavite
Note: Guests outside of DLSU-D will be needing a gate pass. Please RSVP at [email protected] or [email protected]

The folding screen will be returning to San Antonio Museum of Art in Texas after the exhibition.

Lopen Namgay & Lopen Sonam's first week at DLSU-D Center for Heritage Conservation

Today, the two monks participated in restoring a 400 year old panel depicting the Battle of Sekigahara. They assisted in re-applying gold and preparing the stencil papers that will be going on the backside of the new wooden panels.

Mondays-Thursdays are their Thangka restoration days leaving Fridays to explore different artworks and heritage pieces locally and around the world.

Here's to the coming months of learning together 🖌️🤍

💡At the time, these portrait painting services were offered with the body, clothing, and pose already prepared - all that was needed was to add the face. It was much like how ID photos today can have corporate attire digitally added afterwards
