To further ensure the safety and security of Dabawenyo students and the learning environment, the City Government of Davao, through the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) and its partner security clusters, has intensified security measures in public and private schools across the city.
PSSO Head Angel Sumagaysay said during the ISpeak Media Conference on Thursday that City Mayor Sebastian Duterte directed authorities to further strengthen security in schools and other learning institutions.
โGitagaan miโg directive ni City Mayor nga palig-unon ang security labi na sa mga eskwelahan and other learning institutions, although naa man taโy mga in-house nga security personnel through our Public Safety and Security Office, particularly the Civil Security Unit and PSSA. Naka-embed naman ang security sa mga campus nato sa public schools, apil na ang atong mga public colleges,โ he said.
The PSSO has deployed additional security personnel to schools and learning institutions, in coordination with the Davao City Police Office and Task Force Davao.
Sumagaysay said that the PSSO is also in coordination with other uniformed personnel for future deployments.
He also assured Dabawenyos, particularly parents, that the city remains in constant coordination with the Department of Education, even before the recent shooting incidents reported in neighboring provinces.
As part of its preparedness efforts, the PSSO has been conducting simulation exercises in schools, including active-shooter simulation exercises (SIMEX), to strengthen the readiness of security personnel and improve community preparedness.
Through these exercises, students, teachers, and school administrators are taught the appropriate actions to take during such incidents. The emergency response protocol emphasizes three options: hide, run, or fight.
During an active-shooter incident, those inside a room are advised to lock and barricade doors using heavy objects or furniture and remain silent to avoid attracting the shooter's attention. Those who are outside when an incident occurs should immediately run to a safe location.
Sumagaysay said the city places particular emphasis on the โhideโ and โrunโ options for younger students, while fighting to incapacitate the shooter should only be considered as a last resort.
The City Government of Davao, together with the safety and security cluster and the Department of Education, continues to work closely to protect the overall well-being of students and ensure the safety and security of educational facilities across the city.
The public is likewise reminded to remain vigilant, report suspicious individuals, and follow the Hide, Run, and Fight emergency protocol during active-shooter incidents. Emergencies should be reported immediately to authorities by calling 911. CIO
