'BORN OUT OF LOVE, OUT OF CHARITY'

SITREP/Charity: Social workers do their job to uplift the lives of others, out of love and charity and not for financial or material gain, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) General Manager Melquiades “Mel” Robles said.

Robles said in his speech at the PCSO Charity Summit at Lanson Place in Pasay City on Thursday, October 15 that social work, for many, is “the career that has no economic future.”

The PCSO chief said what drives social workers in their job is a single purpose, and described the values that purpose comes from.

“Once a year, we give importance to people who are the epitome of charity and social work. I said yesterday, this is the career that has no economic future,” he said.

Robles said what drives social workers in their job, saying it has one purpose and comes from love and charity.

“Social workers do their job precisely for that one single purpose of uplifting the lives of their fellow man. It is born out of love, out of charity, and maybe even agape,” he said.

Robles compared social work with other fields when it comes to what workers can expect to gain in the future, and added an aside about setting up a school.

“Among all other disciplines, I think this is the one that does not look forward to any financial or material gain in the future. Maybe unless you put up a school for social work, but other than that, this is pure charity,” he said.
