Most people assume a small shadow costs a small amount of power. One shaded cell out of seventy-two on a panel should barely matter — it does not work that way.
Cells inside a panel are wired in series, in groups called substrings, each protected by one bypass diode. Series wiring means every cell in a substring carries the same current, set by its weakest cell. Shade one cell and the rest of the substring keeps pushing the original current through it, forcing that cell into reverse bias. Past a threshold, the substring's voltage collapses and the diode fires, rerouting current around the entire substring — not just the shaded cell. That protects the panel from overheating, but it sacrifices a third of it completely, not partially.
Worked example, computed directly: a 400 W, 72-cell panel with three substrings. Shading just 1 of 72 cells (1.4% of the panel's area) trips one substring's diode, dropping output to 266.7 W — a 33.3% loss. That is a 24 times disproportion between area shaded and power lost.
Real fleet data tells a similar story from the other direction. NREL measured 542 residential systems with module-level power optimisers averaging an 8.3% shading loss, against a modelled 13.0% loss for the same fleet without optimisers — a 36.2% recovery, close to NREL's own reported 20-35% range. That figure is a fleet average across many shading conditions, not a paired before-and-after test on one roof, and Philippine-specific shaded-fleet data is not available.
Ask your installer how your panel's substring layout maps to where your roof actually gets shaded during the day — a chimney, an antenna, a neighbour's tree.
Magnus Renewable Tech designs system layouts around your roof's actual shading pattern.
