On this day, August 17, 1983, at 8:18 PM, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck Northwestern Luzon, centering in Laoag City. Several buildings, including churches, were badly damaged, and many people were injured, with some losing their lives.
It reminds us of the importance of being aware and prepared for these kind of events. Earthquakes can strike without warning, and itβs crucial that we take proactive steps to ensure our safety and the safety of our communities. Adherence to the National Building Code, regular earthquake drills, having an emergency plan, and knowing how to respond in the event of an earthquake are essential measures that can save lives.
