On this day, August 17, 1983, at 8:18 PM, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 struck Northwestern Luzon, centering in Laoag City. Several buildings, including churches, were badly damaged, and many people were injured, with some losing their lives.

It reminds us of the importance of being aware and prepared for these kind of events. Earthquakes can strike without warning, and it’s crucial that we take proactive steps to ensure our safety and the safety of our communities. Adherence to the National Building Code, regular earthquake drills, having an emergency plan, and knowing how to respond in the event of an earthquake are essential measures that can save lives.

I On July 16, 1990, at 4:26 p.m., a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the northern and central parts of Luzon, claiming more than 1,200 lives, damaging infrastructure worth P10 billion, and being considered as one of the most destructive earthquakes in the Philippines.

The epicenter of this earthquake was in Rizal, Nueva Ecija, northeast of Cabanatuan City. Strong shaking was widely felt and resulted to damaged structures in Baguio City, Cabanatuan City, Dagupan City and San Fernando City. The earthquake was also felt in Metro Manila and caused damage to several buildings.

This 1990 Luzon Earthquake generated a 120-km-long surface rupture along the Digdig segment of the Philippine Fault. Other geologic impacts such as liquefaction and earthquake-induced landslides were also documented.

Let us look back and remember not only the tragedy but also the lessons we learned.
