PHI BETA EPSILON: EIGHT DECADES OF BROTHERHOOD, ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE, AND LEGACY
As September 28, 2026 approaches, Phi Beta Epsilon enters the final year of its journey toward a historic milestone—the 80th Founding Anniversary on September 28, 2027, in Iloilo City, Philippines.
For eight decades, Phi Beta Epsilon has stood as more than a fraternity. It has developed into a professional brotherhood of engineers, built upon scholarship, leadership, service, fellowship, integrity, and professional excellence.
A Legacy That Began in 1947
September 28, 1947 marks the birth of Phi Beta Epsilon at Central Philippines College, now Central Philippine University (CPU). The fraternity was founded through the vision and leadership of Professor Juan E. Sornito, together with Engr. Celestino Javier, Arch. Luis Dichupa, Engr. Arturo Rivera, and Engr. Jesus Cordero. Their vision was to bring talented engineering students together to work “shoulder to shoulder” toward a common and noble purpose.
The founding principle was simple but powerful: build better engineers while building lasting brotherhood.
The Growth of the Betan Brotherhood
1950 – Phi Beta Epsilon expanded beyond its original home at Central Philippines College with the establishment of a chapter at Iloilo City College.
October 21, 1964 – The University of Iloilo Chapter was organized in La Paz, Iloilo City, strengthening the fraternity’s presence among engineering students.
February 14, 1969 – The Western Institute of Technology (WIT) Chapter was organized when student brothers from CPU and ICC came together.
September 21, 1978 – The University of San Agustin College of Technology Chapter was established by members of the CPU Chapter.
November 29, 2008 – The Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISAT-U) Chapter was founded through the initiative of Betans from the USA and CPU Chapters.
October 24, 2010 – The University of Iloilo Chapter experienced a revival under the leadership of a Betan alumnus who was then Dean of the College of Technology.
These milestones demonstrate an important characteristic of Phi Beta Epsilon: the fraternity survives and grows because its alumni continue to invest themselves in the next generation.
From Engineering Students to Professional Engineers
The strength of Phi Beta Epsilon is not measured only by the number of chapters it has established. Its deeper legacy is found in the professional lives of the men who have passed through its brotherhood.
Betans have entered diverse fields of engineering and related professions—including civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, electronics and communications, computer, industrial, software, and other specialized disciplines. The fraternity’s official mission emphasizes professional development, mentorship, leadership, service, and lifelong relationships between resident members and accomplished alumni.
As engineers, Betans have carried the values learned through the fraternity into construction, infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, science, education, management, and other professional fields. In this way, the success of Phi Beta Epsilon is reflected not simply in its longevity, but in the contributions of generations of Betans to society.
A Brotherhood Without Borders
What began in Iloilo eventually developed into a broader alumni fellowship extending across the Philippines and internationally.
Today, the fraternity’s alumni network includes Betans in different Philippine regions as well as North America, the Middle East, and other communities abroad. These alumni organizations provide opportunities for mentorship, professional networking, fellowship, reunions, service, and support for resident members.
The result is a remarkable cycle:
Students become engineers.
Engineers become leaders.
Leaders become mentors.
Mentors prepare the next generation of Betans.
That cycle is one of the reasons the fraternity has continued to thrive.
80 Years: A Celebration of Legacy and the Future
On September 28, 2027, Phi Beta Epsilon will reach its 80th Founding Anniversary—eight decades since a group of visionary educators and engineers planted the seed of a professional brotherhood in Iloilo City.
The 80th anniversary should therefore be more than a celebration of the past. It should be a celebration of the people who carried the legacy forward and a renewed commitment to the generations of engineers yet to come.
From the classrooms and engineering laboratories of Iloilo to construction sites, corporations, universities, government institutions, technology companies, and professional communities around the world, the Betan story continues.
1947 → 2027
80 Years of Brotherhood.
80 Years of Engineering Excellence.
80 Years of Leadership and Service.
80 Years of Fellowship.
80 Years of Building Better Engineers and Better Lives.
The Betan Legacy Continues
Phi Beta Epsilon has endured because its foundation was never simply a fraternity name. Its foundation was brotherhood, professional excellence, character, service, and the shared responsibility of one generation to help the next succeed.
As the brothers prepare for the grand 80th Founding Anniversary in Iloilo City on September 28, 2027, the celebration will honor not only where Phi Beta Epsilon came from, but also where the Fellowship of Brother Engineers is going.
From 1947 to 2027—and beyond—the Betan legacy lives on.
Somniavimus hanc fraternitatem vividum symbolum verae consortionis Fratrum Ingeniariorum efficere.
“This fraternity is the fulfillment of our dream — a vivid symbol of true fellowship that unites brother engineers in loyalty, strength, and enduring camaraderie.”
