In a fire emergency, every second counts.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) reminds the public that knowing how to operate a fire extinguisher is just as important as having one. To ensure you’re ready when the heat is on, simply remember the PASS method:
P – Pull the pin: Break the seal and release the locking mechanism.
A – Aim at the base of fire: Point the nozzle toward the source of the flame, not the smoke.
S – Squeeze the nozzle: Release the extinguishing agent with a firm grip.
S – Sweep from side-to-side: Cover the fire area until the flames are completely out.
Also, make sure you have the right extinguisher for the job depending on the classes of fire:
Class A: Ordinary combustibles (wood, paper, cloth).
Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease).
Class C: Electrical equipment (appliances, wiring).
Most modern extinguishers are labeled “ABC”, meaning they are meant to use on all three types.
