PARTNERS IN ACTION: BFAR-SAAD and USM SIKLAB ATBI & IPTBM driving change together through collaborative training on innovative skills to fisherfolk communities

Cotabato Province — In a dynamic “Seminar-Workshop on Wheels” format, the Department of Agriculture–Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR), through the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) Program Phase II, rolled out a three-day Marketing Assistance and Enterprise Development (MAED) Training on Product Packaging, Branding, and Labelling across three municipalities—Tulunan, Antipas, and President Roxas—from November 24–26, 2025.

This intensive capacity-building activity, with the theme “SAAD, kaagapay sa maunlad na buhay,” was delivered in partnership with the USM SIKLAB Agri-Aqua Technology Business Incubator (ATBI) and the Intellectual Property Technology Business Management (IPTBM) under the DOST–PCAARRD RAISE Project. The initiative brought to the ground technical expertise, entrepreneurial insights, and technology-based training that directly addressed the needs of emerging community-based enterprises (CBEs) in the fisheries sector.

SAAD staff members Janryl L. Ibardolasa, RFP (Report Officer), Arnold M. Monteverde (Area Coordinator), and Laida M. Balabagan (Area Coordinator) led the coordination and field facilitation, ensuring smooth implementation and active participation of the fisherfolk associations. The workshop-on-wheels combined lectures, practical demonstrations, and hands-on coaching covering value-adding, packaging layout, brand identity development, and compliance-based labelling. These sessions were delivered by IPTBM and ATBI project representatives Ms. Merry Joy Duran and Ms. Cristy Joy Calambro.

The initiative fostered strong collaboration among SAAD implementers, USM-ATBI and IPTBM specialists, BFAR representatives, and LGU partners—solidifying a support system essential for the long-term success of fisherfolk enterprises. By the end of the rolling workshop, participants gained enhanced knowledge in marketing strategies, visual branding, and product presentation—marking a significant step toward developing competitive, sustainable agri-aqua community enterprises in Cotabato Province.

Meet Mr. John Paul Cabangal, Founder of I-Farm Agribiz & Food Products & FarmWISE Mobile App | Agriculture Ambassador | Agripreneur | Innovator for Sustainable and Smart Farming in Province of Cotabato, Mindanao
-
Mr. John Paul A. Cabangal is a Filipino agripreneur, innovator, and tech advocate from Pigcawayan, North Cotabato, Philippines.
He is the Founder/Owner of I-Farm Agribiz & Food Products, a dynamic agribusiness dedicated to Rabbit Meat Production, Hydroponics, Edible Insects such as Superworms for human consumption and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Rearing as feed for farm animals — as well as the creator of FarmWISE, an all-in-one integrated mobile application designed to empower farmers through technology to become successful agri-entrepreneurs.
Currently studying Bachelor of Science in Agriculture – Major in Animal Science at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM), John Paul has built his career around integrating innovation, sustainability, and digital solutions into agriculture.
“Agriculture is evolving — and farmers should evolve with it. My goal is to make smart, sustainable farming accessible to everyone.”
— John Paul A. Cabangal
His Journey: From Rural Roots to Digital Agripreneurship
Born into a farming family, John Paul’s early years were shaped by hard work and curiosity about how to make farming more efficient and profitable.
His passion for innovation took root where he joined the 4-H Club, studied at USM and developed leadership and agribusiness skills.
A simple experiment in superworm farming as feed for his backyard chicken became his breakthrough idea, one that led to the creation of GRUBilicious Chichaworm and I-Farm Agribiz & Food Products.
Through perseverance and creativity, he turned what many saw as a small, unconventional project into a multi-innovation enterprise that combines farming, technology, and sustainability.
“From superworms to super systems — that’s how we turn small ideas into real change.”
