It’s because our society promotes a certain body image as being beautiful and has only one perception of what the “perfect” girl can look like. According to modern day society, girls should walk and talk pretty, have perfect skin, and put some makeup; they should watch their weight and keep up with the newest trends in fashion.

It has been found that over-all the beauty industry has a negative effect on a woman's self-esteem, body image, and perception of beauty. By using upward comparisons, women are constantly comparing themselves to standards of beauty that society shows to them. Society creates certain expectations of the perfect experiences and many individuals set high standards for themselves.

In the short-term beauty is important because society has put so much emphasis on it being an admired and sought-after trait. It has been found that over-all the beauty industry has a negative effect on a woman's self-esteem, body image, and perception of beauty.

The unrealistic standard of beauty that women are persistently attacked with every single day gives them a goal that is impossible to reach, and the effects of this are traumatic.
