From Awareness to Rights Recognition!

As we observe National Environment Awareness Month, let us move beyond simple recognition and embrace a deeper truth: effective environmental protection cannot exist without human dignity and fundamental rights.

We are constantly reminded of the invaluable contributions made by our waste workers and waste pickers. These dedicated individuals stand as the unseen frontliners of our ecological well-being, proving every day that a cleaner, healthier planet rests directly upon their security and sustained well-being.

This month marks a pivotal moment in the fight for justice: the filing of the Magna Carta for Waste Workers. Crafted in collaboration with PNWWA and supported by the Kabataan Partylist, this is more than just a legislative proposal. It is a powerful demand for change—a bid for the legal recognition, respect, security, and essential benefits that these environmental heroes have long deserved.

: Composting is one of the simplest ways to reduce waste and pollution?

When we compost, we’re not just reducing waste—we’re investing in a healthier, more resilient food system that benefits our communities and the planet. Together with Compost Research & Education Foundation (CREF), we spotlight this year’s theme, "Sustainable Communities Begin with Compost," for stronger, greener, resilient communities through reducing waste, improving soil health, strengthening local food systems, and creating green jobs.

By enriching soil with nutrients, compost supports urban gardens, local farms, and sustainable food production, essential for bringing communities closer together by creating green spaces, building healthier communities, and fighting climate change.

Let’s spread the word about how composting our food scraps and yard waste can create greener, more resilient neighborhoods. Together, we can make composting the norm in every neighborhood.

On November 8, a Coastal Clean-up and Brand Audit in Island Garden City of Samal revealed the top contributors to coastal pollution. Leading the list are Liwayway Holdings Company Limited with 141 items, followed by JBC Food Corporation (67), Nestle (47), Philip Morris International (27), and Monde M.Y. San Corporation (23). Other notable brands include Leslie Corporation (21), Nature’s Spring (19), Columbia International Food Products (11), The Coca-Cola Company (11), and Nutri-Asia Inc. (9).

The audit also recorded waste categories, such as packaging materials (99 pieces), sando bags/labo bags (98 pieces), use clothes (15 pieces), fishing gear (9 pieces), and bottled drinks (9 pieces). This highlights the persistent challenge of managing plastic waste in coastal areas like IGACOS, where branded waste continues to dominate.

According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), microplastics from these items release harmful chemicals into the soil, which can seep into groundwater and nearby water sources, ultimately damaging ecosystems. The audit underscores the significant role of these brands in contributing to environmental degradation in IGACOS, calling for greater accountability from companies producing single-use plastics.

This initiative serves as a reminder of the urgent need to adopt eco-friendly alternatives and stricter waste management regulations. By advocating for sustainable packaging solutions and holding corporations accountable, we can reduce the harmful impacts of plastic waste on our environment and preserve the natural beauty of IGACOS for future generations.
