Kids Need Fiber, Too

Fiber-rich foods aren’t just for adults. Fiber is for kids, too. But if they aren’t eating right, it can be a real challenge for them.

That’s because fiber keeps the digestive tract healthy and strong. Foods that are good sources of fiber are also usually rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients.

Eating this kind of diet also helps reduce the risk of obesity and can give a child a health advantage throughout life.
Here are a couple of easy ways to check your child’s fiber intake:

• Add five to your child’s age. For example, a five-year-old would need about 10 grams of fiber daily (age (5) + 5 = 10).
• Five-a-Day. Make sure your children eat five servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables each day.

To check for fiber content on the label of your food, look for dietary fiber listed under “Total Carbohydrates” on a Nutrition Facts panel. A good source of fiber will contain at least three grams of fiber per serving.

If you don’t have a Nutrition Facts label, you can look up the fiber content of your food here:

Sedentary Lifestyles Accelerate Aging

A recent study has shown that cells age faster during a sedentary lifestyle. This may not be good news for sedentary people.

Telomeres are the tiny caps located on the ends of DNA strands that protect them from fraying. We inherit telomeres from our parents, and regardless of the length of our telomeres at birth, everyone’s telomeres eventually shorten with age. Health status and unhealthy lifestyles are thought to accelerate the process, and scientific studies have shown a strong association between the length of telomeres and the cellular aging process.

Recently researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that mature women who sit for more than 10 hours a day and have a low physical activity level (less than 40 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity a day) had cells that were biologically older by eight years compared to less sedentary women.

It is important to note that this study only looked at the women's activity levels and telomeres at one point in time. It isn’t known whether activity levels or sitting causes telomeres to shorten and it isn’t clear if these results apply to men and younger people. However it’s difficult to argue that most of us would benefit from spending less time sitting down. Maybe it’s time to consider renewing that gym membership!

A mother’s diet during breastfeeding influences food preferences in their infants

Most new mothers are aware of the importance of eating a healthy diet to supply adequate amounts of vitamins and minerals while breastfeeding. Those nutrients are immensely important to an infant’s growth and development.

Interesting new research now shows that a mother’s diet may influence a child’s diet later in life. What lactating mothers eat flavors breast milk and, in turn, modifies their infants’ acceptance of similarly flavored foods.

In this study, the earlier the children were exposed to vegetable flavors in milk, the sooner and more likely they were to accept vegetable flavored cereals.

Early life may be an optimum time for both infants and their mothers to learn to like the taste of healthy foods. Mothers who learn to like and consume vegetables during breastfeeding are more likely to have children who love to eat their vegetables.
