In the Bible, "Rabbi" (meaning "my master" or "teacher") was a respectful title used for respected Jewish religious leaders and scholars, most notably applied to Jesus by his disciples (like Peter, Mary Magdalene, and others) in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, John) as a sign of his wisdom and teaching authority, though Jesus also cautioned against seeking the title for pride. John the Baptist was also called "Rabbi" by his followers.
