The Southern Luzon State University (SLSU), through the Technology Business Incubator (TBI) in partnership with the SLSU Innovation & Technology Support Services Office (ITSSO), strengthened its commitment to innovation-driven community enterprise development through the successful conduct of the Exploratory and Pre-Incubation Meeting on Innovation and Enterprise Development with the Alabat Island Farmers Producers Cooperative (AIFPC) on May 25, 2026, in Alabat, Quezon.
The activity gathered the Board of Directors of AIFPC, local farmers, product producers, and representatives from the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Alabat, Quezon, creating a collaborative platform for discussions on technology transfer, commercialization, enterprise development, and innovation support for community-based industries. Among the locally produced products highlighted during the activity were Coco Sugar, Virgin Coconut Oil, Lipote Wine, Cassava Crackers, and other emerging agri-based products of Alabat.
Prior to the formal meeting, the SLSU delegation conducted a courtesy visit with Honorable Mayor Eizelle โAysโ M. Avellano-Canimo, Municipal Mayor of Alabat, Quezon, to provide an overview of the initiative and discuss possible areas of collaboration between the university and the municipality. During the discussion, Mayor Avellano-Canimo emphasized the need to improve the packaging and labeling quality of Alabat Coco Sugar, particularly addressing concerns about pixelated label prints and the need for stronger marketing strategies to enhance product competitiveness and marketability. In response, the SLSU team expressed its commitment to assist the cooperative in addressing these challenges through innovation support, product enhancement, and enterprise development interventions.
The formal Exploratory and Pre-Incubation Meeting was subsequently held at the DTI Training Center in Brgy. Camagong, Alabat, Quezon. Mr. Giehway R. Liwanag, Science Research Specialist of the SLSU TBI, delivered the activity overview and conveyed the message of support from Dr. Jennifer Edytha J. Lagrazon, Center Chief/Manager of the SLSU TBI, emphasizing the universityโs continued commitment to empowering local communities through innovation, technology transfer, and incubation initiatives.
During the program, Engr. Mary Jane R. Villaverde, Science Research Assistant of the SLSU ITSSO, presented the universityโs developed technologies for commercialization and technology transfer. Her presentation highlighted the technology development process of SLSU, the portfolio of university-developed technologies, and the mechanisms for technology transfer and commercialization designed to support local enterprises and cooperatives.
Meanwhile, Mr. Romano L. Decena, Project Development Officer of the SLSU TBI, presented the SLSU TBI Incubation Program under the theme, โStrengthening Collaborative Pathways for Technology Transfer, Enterprise Development, and Community Innovation.โ The presentation outlined the flagship services offered by the incubator to partner incubatees, including capacity-building support, business development assistance, market linkage opportunities, innovation mentoring, and technology commercialization support. The advantages of partnering with a university-based technology business incubator were likewise emphasized as a strategic approach toward strengthening local enterprises and accelerating community innovation.
Mr. Decena also introduced โPABAON: Mga Teknolohiyang Hatid ng SLSU,โ implemented under Memorandum Order No. 29, s. 2026, which institutionalizes the use of SLSU-developed technologies as commemorative tokens for university events, engagements, and partnerships. The policy represents a significant milestone in strengthening the universityโs innovation ecosystem by ensuring that institutionally recognized technologies developed through research, extension, production, and incubation initiatives serve as official representations of SLSU.
The activity concluded with discussions on technology transfer and partnership opportunities, agreements, next steps, and action planning between SLSU and AIFPC. As part of the pre-incubation process, the cooperative was provided with a Pre-Incubation Form to assess its operational needs, innovation requirements, and enterprise development priorities. The assessment aims to enable the SLSU TBI to deliver tailored interventions and responsive support mechanisms aligned with the cooperativeโs development goals.
To further appreciate the local enterprise initiatives of Alabat, Ms. Mylene L. Culing, representative from the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA)โAlabat, facilitated a tour of the product-processing areas for Alabat Coco Sugar, Lipote Wine, Cassava Crackers, and the Agro-Hub established in partnership with the PCA-Calabarzon.
Through this initiative, the SLSU TBI reaffirms its commitment to promoting inclusive innovation ecosystems, empowering local enterprises, and strengthening university-community-industry collaborations across Quezon Province. Moving forward, the university aims to further expand its technology transfer initiatives, incubation support services, and collaborative innovation programs to assist cooperatives and MSMEs in improving product quality, enhancing market competitiveness, and achieving sustainable enterprise growth through science, technology, and innovation-driven development.
