Pursuant to MHRWS-PAMB Resolution No. 2026-20, the Protected Area Management Office of Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary permanently prohibits the entry, use, and disposal of wet wipes and single-use plastic materials within the protected area. The initiative emanated from the consistent findings of the Protected Area Management Office during the impact monitoring of ecotourism activities in Mount Hamiguitan conducted every semester.

Wet wipes are composed of non-biodegradable plastic fibers and chemical resins that do not decompose in forest environments, while single-use plastics (including PET bottles, sachets, and disposable cutlery) significantly contribute to the degradation of the protected area and its water sources.

The Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary (MHRWS) - Protected Area Management Office, in partnership with Department of Tourism Regional Office XI, recently concluded a successful three-day Homestay Management Training on May 12โ€“14, 2026 at the MHRWS-PAMO Conference Room in Batobato, San Isidro, Davao Oriental.

The activity capacitated Protected Area Tenured Migrants (identified homeowners) from Barangays Sergio Osmeรฑa in Governor Generoso and La Union in San Isidro, Davao Oriental, as well as Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) members, local tourism stakeholders, representatives from the City of Mati Tourism Office, officials from the municipalities of San Isidro and Governor Generoso, and Protected Area Management Office (PAMO) personnel.

The training introduced participants to the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence, aimed at professionalizing residential hospitality services within communities surrounding the protected area. The sessions covered key areas of hospitality operations, including Foundations of Operations and Housekeeping, Food and Beverage Services, Kitchen Operations, and Front Office and Guest Experience.

Barangays Sergio Osmeรฑa and La Union were identified as priority areas for this capacitation since they commonly serve as the main jump-off and debriefing points for visitors exploring the scenic landscapes of the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary. While organized portersโ€™ associations are already in place in both communities, the homestay industry recognized as a promising source of community-based income generation remains untapped.

Recognizing the industryโ€™s potential, the initiative received strong support from the concerned local government units and participating homeowners, acknowledging homestay management as an opportunity to enhance ecotourism and generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities.

The program also magnifies the importance of strengthening community participation in the conservation and protection of the Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary by linking tourism development with environmental stewardship.
