From Training to Tradition: The Story of Our Handwoven Bamboo Basket
This is how we started our journey in developing the handwoven bamboo basket or “alat” of KAPAWA–Maasin.
Through the Product Development Training supported by the AFoCO Project and implemented by the DENR–Forest Management Bureau (DENR-FMB), in collaboration with DENR Region VI, PENRO Iloilo, and CENRO Guimbal, our members learned, practiced, and refined traditional bamboo weaving techniques while developing functional, innovative, and market-responsive designs.
From preparing bamboo splits and weaving by hand to developing different shapes, sizes, and designs, every basket reflects the skill, creativity, and dedication of our community weavers.
More importantly, this product supports the “Balik Alat” program of the Local Government of Maasin, which promotes the use of reusable alat as an alternative to single-use plastics. By bringing back the "alat", we are not only reviving a traditional craft, we are also helping promote plastic reduction, sustainable livelihoods, and responsible use of local bamboo resources.
🌿 From bamboo in our CBFM area to baskets in our communities, every weave creates a livelihood and every reuse helps protect our environment.
