PRESS RELEASE

June Electric Bills May Increase Due to Higher Cost of Electricity Supply

AKELCO would like to inform its member-consumer-owners (MCOs) that electricity bills for June 2026 may be higher due to rising power generation costs caused by supply shortages in the Visayas grid and increased fuel prices in the global market.
The increase began after the recent conflict in the Middle East triggered a rise in fuel prices worldwide. To help manage the impact of these higher fuel costs, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) temporarily suspended the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) on March 26, 2026.

When WESM resumed operations on May 1, 2026, the Visayas power grid encountered several challenges. One of Panay Island's major power plants, with a capacity of 150 megawatts (MW), remained offline due to repairs, while several coal-fired power plants also experienced outages. These disruptions reduced the available electricity supply in the region.

The cooperative further noted that the extreme heat experienced in recent months increased electricity demand as more households and businesses relied on cooling appliances. With supply limited and demand rising, electricity prices in the market increased significantly.

As a result, the cost of purchasing electricity from WESM rose by 312% from April to May 2026. The cooperative's market exposure also increased from 22.5% to 30.3%. Because of these higher procurement costs, the generation charge is expected to increase by approximately ₱1.5154 to ₱2.5739 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in the June 2026 billing period.

Despite these challenges, AKELCO would like to emphasize that it continues to take steps to lessen the impact on consumers. The cooperative is exploring opportunities to support renewable and locally sourced energy projects that could help stabilize electricity costs in the future.

AKELCO also encourages consumers to practice energy-saving measures, such as turning off unused appliances, using energy-efficient lighting, limiting air-conditioner use, and avoiding unnecessary electricity consumption.

The cooperative assured its MCOs that it remains committed to providing reliable electricity service while pursuing sustainable energy solutions that will benefit the people of Aklan.

RATE ADVISORY

AKELCO Records Another Reduction in Power Rates for May 2026

Despite the continuing economic challenges brought about by international conflicts and global market uncertainties, which continue to put pressure on fuel costs and electricity prices, AKELCO remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering reliable service and more affordable electricity rates to its member-consumer-owners (MCOs).

For the billing month of May 2026, AKELCO recorded a decrease in power rates compared to the rates charged in April 2026. This development comes as welcome relief to consumers, especially at a time when many households are managing rising costs of basic commodities and other daily expenses.

The decrease in rates was achieved through the cooperative's continuous efforts to secure a cost-efficient power supply for its consumers. In addition, the recent Market Suspension implemented in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) also
contributed to the lower generation costs reflected in this month's billing. With lower market prices during the period, AKELCO was able to pass on the reduction to its consumers.

With the May 2026 residential rate set at Php11.5099 per kWh, consumers will enjoy a decrease of Php0.5875 per kWh from the previous month's rate. This translates to savings of approximately Php58.75 for every 100 kWh of electricity consumption.
While MCOs may enjoy lower electricity rates this month, AKELCO continues to season when electricity consumption typically increases due to higher usage of cooling appliances and other household equipment.

Nevertheless, AKELCO assures its MCOs that the cooperative will continue to explore all available measures to help manage electricity costs while maintaining stable and reliable service throughout its coverage area.

The cooperative also continues to coordinate
closely with concerned agencies and stakeholders to protect the interests of consumers amid fluctuating market conditions.
