On 19 August, R.G. Manabat & Co. participated in Arangkada Philippines’ stakeholder dialogue on Revenue Memorandum Circular No. 5-2024 and emerging tax compliance challenges, held at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati City.

Deputy Head of Tax Mary Karen Quizon-Sakkam served as keynote speaker for the session on “Setting the Context,” discussing the policy direction and latest developments on the taxation of cross-border services. She highlighted the shift from automatic tax exposure toward a more fact-based approach.

She also shared her insights as a panelist during the discussion on strengthening consistent interpretation, implementation, tax certainty, and compliance.

Tax Partner Leandro Ben Robediso and Directors Julius Patrick Acosta and Andrew James Gerard Ruiz were also in attendance.

The firm’s participation in the dialogue reflects its commitment to contributing its tax expertise to discussions on evolving tax policies and compliance.

Through Revenue Memorandum Circular (RMC) No. 72-2026, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) eliminates the prior-ruling practice seeking confirmation on the taxability of proprietary club shares held in trust.

The regulation simplifies the process by acknowledging the exemption of transfers of proprietary club shares from Capital Gains Tax, Documentary Stamp Tax, and Donor’s tax, subject to certain documentary requirements. This is a welcome housekeeping measure by the BIR that eases the administrative burden on taxpayers.

Technology Consulting Partner Gilbert Trinchera shared his expertise as a panelist at the ClearTax Finance & Tax Transformation Forum Philippines, held on 12 August at Shangri-La The Fort, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

During the panel discussion, Gilbert shared perspectives on how e-invoicing can go beyond regulatory compliance and serve as a catalyst for finance transformation, stronger controls, better data, and more connected digital processes.

He emphasized the importance of viewing e-invoicing not as a standalone tax requirement, but as an opportunity to strengthen the connection between tax, finance, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), data, and technology, helping organizations build a more integrated and future-ready operating model.

On 14 August, participants of R.G. Manabat & Co.’s Tax Law Internship Program joined an educational tour at the Board of Investments (BOI) office, giving them an opportunity to broaden their perspectives, learn from industry professionals, and connect their academic learning with real-world practice.

During the tour, the interns gained insights into the functions of BOI’s various divisions and their role in supporting corporate compliance and the Philippine government’s nation-building efforts. Tax Assistant Manager Erika Aira De Peralta and Christopher Lambert Fabros were also present during the visit.
