According to "The Alkaline Diet Recipe Book," after digestion, foods leave a residue in the body. The potential of hydrogen, or pH, of this residue varies depending on the type of food eaten, and can be acidic, neutral or alkaline. The residue affects the pH of the blood, and acidic blood can lead to conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease. Eating more alkaline foods causes the pH of the blood to stabilize at a slightly alkaline pH between 7.35 and 7.45

Okra
Okra, or ladyfinger, is a vegetable high in alkaline minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium. These minerals help to alkalize your body by leaving an alkaline residue. According to the Alkaline Diet website, the soluble fiber in okra can reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer of any type.

Dragon Fruit
Dragon fruit contains many vitamins, alkaline minerals and antioxidants. It contains calcium and vitamins B1, B2 and C. According to the Alkaline Diet website, the alkalinity of dragon fruit lowers blood glucose levels, which can be valuable to people with diabetes. Dragon fruit contains large amounts of dietary fiber which binds to acidic residue, making it easier to excrete. Dragon fruit also helps in hydration because of its high water content.


Avocado
Though avocado has a high concentration of fat, it contains many alkalizing vitamins and minerals. Because its concentration of alkalizing substances is so high, its alkalizing properties can take affect without ingestion: When placed on the skin, it can alkalize the skin, causing it to become moisturized and soft. What Is an Alkaline Diet?

An alkaline diet, unlike typical specialized diets intended to help you lose weight, is geared toward treating cancer as well as aging-related muscle loss. Alkaline diets are intended to help in treating cancer, according to the Metropolitan State College of Denver. By keeping tissue cells more alkaline, this type of diet raises the body's pH, creating an unfavorable environment for the growth of cancer cells. Healthy body tissues are alkaline, high pH, while tissues damaged by cancer are acidic, or low-pH. In addition to treating cancer, an alkaline diet composed of plenty of raw vegetables and very low protein intake can help aging men and women preserve lean muscle mass, reports the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

Warning
Though an alkaline diet may be helpful for aging people facing muscle loss as well as serve a component of cancer treatment, you should not proceed with such a diet without first talking to your physician. An alkaline diet alone is not proper medical treatment for cancer or muscle loss -- a comprehensive medical approach is required to treat these serious ailments. Also, because alkaline diets are low in protein your body may require -- depending on your individual medical condition and history -- only a doctor is qualified to advise you on whether or not an alkaline diet is right for you.

Foods either produce acid or alkaline in the body after they are metabolized. Acid and alkaline foods cannot be determined according to taste. Too much acidity or an abundance of alkaline occurs after foods have been digested. Acid or alkaline output can be measured by an at-home pH test. For tests that measure either too acidic or too alkaline, eating from the opposite food group, or eating foods that act as buffers, can help.


Alkaline-Producing Foods

Foods that produce the strongest amounts of alkaline are baking soda, sea salt and mineral water. Most vegetables and fruits are alkaline-producing foods to varying degrees, and this includes celery, alfalfa, cucumber, peppers, cauliflower, rutabaga, eggplant, sprouts, greens, sea vegetables and tomatoes. Most fruits are alkaline-producing, even acid fruits such as lemons and most dried fruits, according to Dr. Elson Haas, author of "Staying Healthy with Nutrition."

When you think of food that is grown outdoors naturally, you might have identified an alkaline-producing edible such as onions, burdock root, sweet potatoes, yams, tangerines, cinnamon and soy. The lists of alkaline-producing foods are vast and include poppy seeds, chestnuts, pepper, cashews, parsnip, garlic, kale, parsley, endive, mustard greens, ginger root and broccoli.


Neutral Foods for Acid State

In most cases, people consume more acidic foods than alkaline foods. For an acid state, the neutral foods are vegetables, especially sea vegetables and fruits. In addition, oatmeal, brown rice, most dried beans and peas and sunflower seeds can help neutralization, according to Haas. Some dairy products tend to act as buffers, including fresh, unsalted butter, fresh raw cream, milk, whey and yogurt. For a neutralizing drink, mix the juice of 1/2 lime, lemon or apple cider vinegar in water.


Acid-Producing Foods

Most diets consist of primarily acid-producing foods, which might upset the body's acid/alkaline balance. The most acidic foods are jams, jellies, sugar and ice cream, along with table salt, yeast, white vinegar, beef products, barley and fried foods. Dr. Elizabeth Lipski, in her book "Digestive Wellness," says that nutmeg, pecans, aspartame, saccharin, soy milk and coffee are acid-producing. Less acidic foods are pine nuts, yogurt, honey and rice vinegar. The digestive system produces acid from meat and fish, including pork, veal, chicken, tuna and sardines. Other acid-producing proteins are eggs, lamb, white rice and white bread.

A bloated belly and water retention can make you feel uncomfortable and just might leave your clothes ill-fitting as well. The key to eliminating belly bloat and water weight is to identify what is causing it. Bloating and water retention have a myriad of causes, from PMS to gas and constipation. Finding your trigger is the best way to trim your waistline.

Step 1
Revamp your diet. Some foods can cause gas, which results in a bloated belly. Eliminate or reduce gas-causing foods from your diet. Baked beans, cabbage and cauliflower can result in gas and belly bloat, as can alcohol and carbonated drinks. Chewing gum and hard candy can also make you suck in more air and, thus, bloat more easily.

Step 2
Cut out the sodium. Salt can lead to water retention, which can increase that belly bloat. Taste before you salt your food, and season it conservatively. Avoid high-sodium items including canned soups and vegetables, soy sauce and deli meats.

Step 3
Slowly add fiber to your diet. If your bloated belly is caused by constipation, a high-fiber diet can relieve this uncomfortable condition and reduce your bloat. However, eating a lot of high-fiber foods at once can increase the bloat, so slowly increase your fiber intake. Sources of high-fiber foods include vegetables, whole grains and some cereals. You can also take a fiber supplement, but talk to your doctor first.

Step 4
Eat slowly. Eating quickly and on the go can make you take in more air when you eat, which can result in a bloated belly. Chew slowly to allow the saliva to drench your food, making it easier for the stomach to digest.

Step 5
See your doctor. If changes to your diet do not result in less belly bloat and water retention, have your doctor evaluate your symptoms. Some conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome and appendicitis, feature belly bloat as a symptom, so get these conditions ruled out -- or treated if necessary.

Tips and Warnings
Some women experience water retention in the days leading up to their period. Exercise and a healthy diet can help reduce PMS-caused water weight.
