The Philippines maintained its Tier 1 ranking for 4 years in a row in the latest edition of the US State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report. The Philippines also remains to be the only ASEAN country to achieve this distinction.

Tier 1 ranking is given to countries such as the Philippines for having fully met the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking under the Trafficking Victims Protections Act (TVPA) of the United States Government. According to the report, the Philippine government continued to demonstrate serious and sustained efforts by implementing prosecution procedures that reduce the potential for further harm to child s*x trafficking victims; convicting and punishing traffickers; including putting in place robust efforts to prevent trafficking of Filipino migrant workers and to assist those who become victims of trafficking overseas.
