"No rewrite" is a promise, not a decision.

At the September 30 executive briefing hosted by and Orange & Bronze Software Labs (O&B), a tech leader from the FSI sector asked a crucial question most migration plans assume: "Beyond 'no rewrite,' what actually decides whether we rehost, refactor, or rewrite?"

There are three paths, and each fits a different kind of system:
Rehost, when an application can move to a new Java runtime as it is.
Refactor, when specific parts won't survive the move.
Rewrite, when the domain logic no longer fits the business’ current goals.

Choosing among them is risky. At O&B, we use automated tests to help you decide.

When a user reports an error, such as slow load time, the application might be running and the infrastructure might look healthy. The problem usually lies somewhere in between.

This is the patchwork problem. Logs live in one tool, infrastructure metrics in another, and performance data somewhere else.

Edusuite, an all-in-one school management system that brings together student records, admin workflows, and learning analytics, experienced this exact problem. As platforms like Edusuite scale, piecing these disconnected signals together makes it harder to understand what is actually happening.

Observability is not simply about collecting more data. It is about connecting traces, errors, and database queries around a single incident. Instead of treating every endpoint or metric as a separate clue, the team sees the shared context.

That connected context is also what makes AI useful. Edusuite's tech leads, Florante Jr Gamat and Sam Ong, connected Claude to Datadog through MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets an AI assistant query tools like Datadog directly.

"Last week, there was an issue with one of our build pipelines, and I just opened up our AI chat and I gave the URL of our build pipeline and asked, 'What seems to be the issue?' Then, it got all of the information from Datadog... from the infrastructure, the logs… and then it suggested a possible fix. It’s very exciting to have AI through Datadog MCP to know things about your services and infrastructure… [S]olving problems is very easy with these tools.”

The answers were better because the data was already connected. AI can't piece together what your stack keeps apart. The fewer places your team needs to look, the sooner they can fix what matters.

Last week, September 30, Orange & Bronze Software Labs (O&B) and Azul hosted tech leaders and executives over lunch for "Risk Mitigation Strategies in Java Modernization."
