"Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.” - Daniel 4:37
Most of us have achievements, positions, or something we can be proud of. But what happens when the things we are proud of begin to make us forget who is truly in control?
In the book of Daniel, we see the lives of four faithful men from Israel. They were taken into captivity and faced pressure, trials, and even the threat of death. Yet, they continued to remain faithful to God.
At the same time, Nebuchadnezzar was a powerful king. He had authority, influence, wealth, and everything that could make a person feel like they had it all.
But Daniel 4 reminds us of this:
No one is higher than God.
Nebuchadnezzar had everything, but he failed to recognize that his position and power were ultimately under God’s authority. Because of his pride, God humbled him and showed him that “those who walk in pride he is able to humble.”
Sometimes, we can also place our confidence in our achievements, abilities, position, relationships, or influence. These things are not necessarily bad. But when they become the source of our identity and cause us to forget God, they can become idols in our hearts.
Humility is knowing your worth without thinking you are better than the people around you.
Having a position or influence is not wrong. The problem begins when we allow these things to take the place that belongs to God.
At the end of the chapter, Nebuchadnezzar finally recognized God as the King of heaven and acknowledged His sovereignty.
May we also learn to recognize that whatever we have—our achievements, position, influence, and abilities—comes from God and remains under His authority.
No matter how high we rise, may we never forget who is higher.
Have a blessed Sunday! 🤍
