“But young writers: read Gregorio Brillantes,” wrote Filipino writer Jose “Butch” Dalisay Jr. in his essay posted on August 6, 2023. And as a Mr. Dalisay fan, I did just tha…

Thank you, People Dynamics Inc.., PhilHealth Region VII, Mary Donnavel Libron Buloron, and Denice Eloisa Dabon, for giving me this humbling opportunity to train professionals. It was an honor to help train some of PhilHealth Region VII's staff on written communication for business on May 10–11, 2023.

It was a memorable, out-of-the-box learning experience for me as someone who had not conducted face-to-face training in over three years. The preparation was exhausting, but the results were worth it. So thank you!

Because it's a special day, we picked a poem—particularly the last two lines from "God Speaks to the Soul" by Mechtild of Madgeburg—to keep our hearts extra warm today. Happy Valentine's Day! ❤️

And where the desires of two come together
There love is perfected.

We at the Memoriter love short but arousing sentences. Literary critic Jeff Dolven aptly described our sentiments when he tackled a line from Virginia Woolf’s The Waves (1931): The trees wave, the clouds pass.

In his column on the Paris Review (November 2, 2017), he wrote: "Such a plain sentence bids to grasp the experience more tightly than the vagrant ruminations around it. What is more shared, after all, than such basic grammar? It is the common law at the bottom of speech."

The second installment of Jeff Dolven's column on sentences. This week: a bewitching sentence by Virginia Woolf.
