Corrosion doesn't start at the surface. It starts inside the concrete.

When steel reinforcement is exposed to chlorides and moisture, corrosion doesn't happen overnight. But once it begins, the consequences can be significant. As steel corrodes, it expands, creating internal pressure that leads to cracking, spalling and increased maintenance throughout the life of the structure.

BarChip has been selected as a finalist for the Supplier Excellence Award at the 2026 Rail Industry Awards, Australia and New Zealand. BarChip was nominated for the β€œPort Chalmers Rail Sidings Project”, where 19 tonnes of BarChip fibre replaced 550 tonnes of steel reinforcement, reducing carbon footprint by 900 tonnes. Research from JKP Static shows how design optimisation is unlocking the full potential of fibre reinforced concrete.
But the real shift isn’t the material, it’s the design approach. In this case, the application was hashtag fibre reinforced concrete manholes used during the refurbishment or installation of new railway tracks in Hungary.
Because current standards don’t fully encompass the behaviour of macro synthetic fibre reinforced concrete, the study moves beyond prescriptive rules and uses advanced finite element modelling with validation through full-scale testing.
The result:
β€’ More efficient structural design
β€’ Corrosion free solution for in-ground infrastructure
β€’ Lower carbon footprint
β€’ Faster, simpler construction process
This is a clear move toward performance based design, where optimisation replaces assumption and materials are used for what they do best.
