1️⃣ Certain things are breadcrumbs no matter what:
🍞 Liking a story or a post
🥖 Reposting something to get your attention
🥐 Sending you a meme or a reel
🍞 Talking to mutual friends about you
In these cases, you don’t need to respond.
Your ex is testing the waters and their main goal is to soothe their own anxiety by getting a response from you.
2️⃣ If they text you, things can be a little different.
Most people who reach out are afraid of rejection, so it is common not to open up right away and say:
“I made a huge mistake! I miss you! Let’s get back together!”
Most times, people will text something small and simple, so how do you tell if it’s a breadcrumb or something more?
I recommend responding and matching their energy to see where they take it.
If it fizzles, let it fizzle.
If they make it into something more, meet them where they’re at.
If it goes nowhere and it happens more than once, I’d consider it breadcrumbing and set a boundary like this:
“Thanks for reaching out to me, but it hurts me to see your messages when I know you’re not looking for a relationship. Let me know if you change your mind, but otherwise, please don’t text me.”
The texting phase can be confusing so I made a guide to help you get through every step of it so you can maximize the chance of meeting up without hurting yourself in the process.
