π― ADOPT AN ATHLETE'S MINDSET
TO OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE.
Stamina. Endurance. Energy.
Hundreds of hours of practice every working day.
Immersing yourself in a tightly-fought game.
Celebrating victory magnanimously.
Embracing bitter defeat graciously.
These are some of the roller-coaster emotions a professional, or even an amateur, athlete must go through. Creating a champion's psyche takes an endless process for one who is so determined to win.
I myself am NO athlete in my whole life. I was a skinny kid and i have never competed in any sporty competition in such levels an athlete normally participates.
I am just what i call a "leisure athlete or passionate gamer". One who occasionally tries some sports for leisure and physical conditioning.
But i am an incurable fanatic of basketball and boxing among other sports.
Since i was a teen, i have admired some of the world's famous players and boxers who indelibly made their marks, not just because of skills but more because of their winning mentalities. On how they have produced such earth-shaking achievements using determination and endurance. Their minds are attuned to the optimum levels. They conquer not just the competition but their innate weaknesses. They changed the game. They altered the landscape. And their immortality and enigma are forever etched in the records books.
Twelve years ago, while in awe of the winning sports philosophies these alpha athletes have displayed, i began to adopt them and make some concepts the focus of my journey in the corporate world.
I have developed my own system in team creation. My own mantra. My own kind of culture and philosophies upon which my team could absorb, revolve and evolve. I simply translated sports philosophies into workplace concepts in leading my team. And somehow, these brought step-by-step successes, amidst obstacles and early resistance, as i propagated the formula across the board. From my original people when i was a rookie Manager up to the present time of my being an Area Head to my 681 Branch Heads, Officers and Staff.
The winning mindset propagates creativity and advances new dimensions in cultivating productivity. All with the end view of inspiring people and strengthening their character which could lead to boosting business generation and operational efficiency..
So I have adopted the mental persuasion of an athlete and make them contagious. Because i want everyone to say:
GameOn !!! to every challenge
GameOn !!! in providing care for my teamates
GameOn !!! to develop winning attitude
Yes, the idea is to translate sports' winning philosophies into the workplace. Intangibles that would propel an employee to raise the level of his competency, endurance and teamanship, all developed via infusion of the mindset of an athlete.
So let me share some of the factors that would make an employee adopt the mind of an athlete.
π1. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
Nobody excels in any field without sweating it out in practices. We need to hasten the development of our skills and attitude by employing great, positive habits everyday. By looking for ways to constantly improve. By doing initiatives to upgrade our mindset.
Yes, we can practice positive thinking and enhance competitive psyche. Just squeeze and release all the adrenaline in your system and you shall be energized to learn and give help to others in need of assistance.
π2. ENHANCE TEAMANSHIP
In creating a well-oiled team, you cannot just perform, produce and succeed on your own without putting teamwork with your fellow employees. Everyone must know the goals, each one must perform a role. You cannot just "shoot the ball" without deliberately planning what plays to execute. The end goal is to harness each person's talents so that the team can produce a system of learning.
π3. DEVELOP COACHING SKILLS
I always say i don't want to become just a plain Area Head. And I don't want my Branch Managers to become, well, just Branch Managers..
I want us all to develop the skills of being a coach. One who is compassionate but tough. Caring but competitive. One who could guide and encourage people to learn.
If our teamates want to learn, our team can potentially progress and eventually win. But if some people in the team don't want to learn, cooperate and participate even if they are given the rank and authority, they cannot open their eyes to realities of winning.
Just like guiding any competitive team, a coach has to be firm, action-oriented and goal-setter so that everybody becomes inspired, disciplined and always be in "GameOn" mode.
π4. ON HANDLING DEFEAT
One doesn't always win and its a fact.
On the average, losses are more prevalent at the start than victories. Missing a "three" or "hitting the canvass" are just unavoidable occurrences.
But failures must not dampen spirits. In fact, failure is education. Failure should push us more to do better. To practice even harder. To dream even bigger.
No success can be defined without going through failures, disappointments and fatigues. Failures must set us up to bounce back strongly in the next game.
The warrior in you must rise to the occasion. As long as you dissect the factors why a team fails and find new strategies to regain composure and will to win, you can bounce back. And one more thing, we should all be gracious in accepting defeat and extend congratulatory hand to the winner. Throw away pride, ego and insecurity.
π5. MAGNANIMITY IN VICTORY
It's definitely a great feeling to win...everybody feels the euphoria that lasts maybe for an hour, for days or for weeks.
But victories must be handled with care. Victories must be shared to all who deserve recognition. Credit should be given to the entire team who worked hard to achieve the feat. No one can claim excellent solo performance. No big roles, no small roles. Just one big teamanship.
Because every member of the team carries on his shoulders the sacrifices and dedication of his teamates. Reason why he worked so hard to make contribution of his own.
A winner must extend his hand. Must acknowledge the strengths of his opponent.
A victor must be gracious. Because there must be statemanship, not just sportsmanship, in any competition.
π6. Finally, A WINNING CULTURE..
It takes years to develop. It takes a generation to achieve. No such thing as an overnight success. The important thing is, one has to start creating a winning culture from within. Block by block. Brick by brick.
Whatever strategy a leader called "coach" could adopt, there must be humanization of ways to understand the process and ensure development of talent, skills and maturity of every member.
There must be an identity for the team.
A mantra. A rallying philosophy. They will serve as compass for everyone. Winning the hearts and minds of our people is of paramount consideration.
Once a leader or a coach makes a positive influence to the team, in mind and spirit, losing for them is NOT an option.
The only choices are either WINNING OR LEARNING. Or better if BOTH...
