Candles play an important role, not only in the Darkness, but also in our faith. The symbolism of light has long been used in religious practice, as well as the general usage of candles. In the Catholic church, light has always had a special significance because it represents Christ. We know that Jesus called himself the light of the world.
Additionally, St. Johnโs Gospel connects Christ with the imagery of light in John 1:4: โIn him was life; and the life was the light of men.โ
Just like Jesus, there are other people in our lives who also act like candlesโthey are the good people who are willing to burn themselves, or sacrifice themselves, to give others light.
As we remember the people who have gone before us, may we take this day to reflectโlet us appreciate the candles of our lives while we still have them, before life teaches us to love the candles that we lost.
Have a Blessed All Souls' Day, everyone!
