THE 15/5 RULE: A SMALL GESTURE THAT CAN CHANGE A GUEST’S EXPERIENCE
In hospitality, we often talk about luxury, service standards, SOPs and guest satisfaction.
But sometimes, exceptional service starts with something much simpler:
Looking up. Smiling. Saying hello.
The 15/5 Rule is a simple guest-service principle used in many hotels:
👀 Within 15 feet
Make eye contact and offer a warm smile.
👋 Within 5 feet
Take the next step — greet the guest verbally.
“Good morning!”
“Good afternoon!”
“Welcome!”
“How may I assist you?”
Simple, right?
Yet here's the controversial part:
How many hotels teach this rule — but fail to create a culture where employees actually practise it?
A guest walking through a hotel corridor shouldn't feel invisible.
And a team member shouldn't need a manager standing nearby to remember basic hospitality.
The 15/5 Rule isn't really about distance.
It's about awareness.
It tells the guest:
👉 I see you.
👉 You are welcome here.
👉 I'm available if you need help.
Of course, good service is more than smiling and saying hello. Tone, body language, timing and genuine willingness to help matter just as much.
But these small interactions can be the difference between:
“I stayed at a hotel.”
and
“I felt welcomed at that hotel.”
💭 A question for hospitality leaders:
Do your teams genuinely practise the 15/5 Rule — or do they only know it because it is written in the SOP?
And for the front-line professionals:
What makes a greeting feel genuinely welcoming rather than forced?
Agree 👍 or Disagree 👎?
If you believe small details still define great hospitality, share this with someone working in hotels.
