A car fire takes less than 5 minutes to destroy a vehicle. Sometimes, less than 30 seconds to trap a family inside.

So why are fire extinguishers still not mandatory in most vehicles in the Philippines?

While we continue reacting after tragedies happen, South Korea is already implementing proactive road safety measures.

Starting December 2024, Korea’s National Fire Agency (NFA) requires fire extinguishers in vehicles carrying 5 or more passengers — a smart policy designed to prevent small fires from becoming deadly disasters.

This is not a mere policy-making.
This is about preparedness, accountability, and saving lives before it’s too late.

A simple fire extinguisher can stop a fire before it spreads. It can protect passengers. It can save children, families, and motorists on the road.

Philippine authorities should seriously consider studying and implementing similar safety measures for public protection.
