Have you ever felt a wave of shame in a moment that should be pure joy?
That’s how I felt as I stood singing (or mouthing) the UP Naming Mahal hymn after UP’s victory against DLSU last Sunday (UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball).
I couldn’t remember the lyrics! How could I stand proudly for my alma mater’s triumph when I stumbled over such an important song?
This experience made me reflect deeply. While the embarrassment stung, it highlighted the significance of taking pride in my journey.
My connection to UP is strong, and even if I faltered, my love for my university remains unwavering.
Interestingly, I’ve memorized the La Sallian hymn far better, thanks to my two kids who are La Sallians.
For more than 12 years, I’ve sung that hymn with them during school programs, creating meaningful bonds through shared experiences.
This reinforces the idea that pride and connection often come from active participation.
Moreover, this moment prompted me to think about reflection and improvement. Just as I plan to review the UP hymn and commit it to memory, I recognize the importance of reflecting on my career experiences—both successes and stumbles.
Acknowledging my limitations is the first step toward growth, whether remembering lyrics to heart or excelling at work.
In personal and professional settings, we must celebrate our journeys, learn from our vulnerabilities, and strive for improvement.
I may have stumbled during the hymn, but I’ll carry that experience forward as motivation.
Let’s embrace our challenges and commit to learning and connection in all areas of our lives!
P.S. Amidst the excitement, I couldn’t resist capturing a moment with the legendary actor Jaime Fabregas, a La Sallian. Seeing him there, still passionate about his alma mater, inspired me. I hope to one day share that same unwavering loyalty and enthusiasm for UP.
