🚨 COMMON MISTAKES OF VA BOOKKEEPER ASPIRANTS 🚨

(Read this before you apply for clients 👀)
Thinking of becoming a VA Bookkeeper using QuickBooks Online or Xero?
Hold on—because these are the mistakes that silently ruin your chances of getting hired (and keeping clients) 👇

❌ 1. Skipping the basics
You jump straight into software without understanding:
👉 Debit vs Credit
👉 Normal balances
👉 Financial statements
Result? You become a button-clicker, not a real bookkeeper 😬

❌ 2. Relying too much on automation
“Auto-categorized na po, so tama na yan.”
Nope. Even in QuickBooks Online and Xero, automation still needs human analysis.
Wrong setup = WRONG reports 📉

❌ 3. Struggling with bank reconciliation
This is BASIC—but many avoid it 😳
👉 Can’t find discrepancies
👉 Don’t know how to fix errors
Remember: if reconciliation is wrong… everything is wrong‼️

❌ 4. Submitting work without checking
No review =
🚫 Wrong amounts
🚫 Duplicate entries
🚫 Misclassified transactions
In bookkeeping: ACCURACY > SPEED 💯

❌ 5. No understanding of Chart of Accounts
Categorizing without thinking? Big mistake.
You need to know where transactions really belong.
Otherwise → messy reports 😵

❌ 6. Avoiding adjusting entries
Afraid to fix mistakes?
That will only make things worse over time 😬
Adjustments are NORMAL in bookkeeping ✔️

❌ 7. Poor documentation
No notes. No explanation. No audit trail.
So when the client asks “Why did you do this?”
👉 You freeze 😶

❌ 8. Can’t interpret financial reports
You can generate reports—but can you explain them? 🤔
Clients don’t just need data…
They need someone who UNDERSTANDS the numbers 📊

❌ 9. Not following client instructions
Even if your work is “correct,”
if it’s not aligned with the client’s process… it’s still WRONG 🚫

❌ 10. Rushing everything
Bookkeeping is not a race 🏃‍♀️
It’s about being detailed, accurate, and reliable

❌ 11. No continuous learning
You stop after basics?
Then expect to be left behind 😶
The best VAs are always upskilling 📚

❌ 12. Weak communication
No updates. No clarification. No initiative.
In freelancing, communication builds trust 🤝

✨ REAL TALK:
Using QuickBooks Online or Xero is NOT enough.
To stand out as a VA Bookkeeper, you need:
✔️ Strong foundation
✔️ Attention to detail
✔️ Analytical thinking
✔️ Professional communication

💬 If you’re serious about becoming a VA Bookkeeper…
Start fixing these mistakes NOW—not when you already have a client.
