LOOK: | BFP Cotabato City Issues Reminder on Dangers and Penalties of Open Burning

COTABATO CITY — The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Cotabato City Fire Station, under the leadership of FCINSP ATTY OMAR NASSEF D BAKONG, CPA, has issued a public reminder warning residents against the practice of open burning due to its serious risks to public safety, health, and the environment.

According to the BFP, open burning including the burning of leaves, household waste, and other combustible materials can produce harmful smoke and toxic gases that may cause respiratory problems and contribute to air pollution.

More importantly, it increases the risk of accidental fires that may spread rapidly, especially during dry and windy conditions, endangering lives and properties.

The agency emphasized that open burning is strictly prohibited under Republic Act No. 9003, which bans the burning of solid waste in the Philippines. Violators may face fines and other penalties as provided by law. Additionally, such acts may also constitute a violation of Republic Act No. 8749, which aims to maintain and protect the country’s air quality.

BFP Cotabato City further urged the public to practice proper waste management, including waste segregation, recycling, and composting of biodegradable materials, as safer and environmentally friendly alternatives.

Authorities also encouraged residents to report any incidents of open burning to their nearest fire station or local government unit.

The BFP reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the community and called for the cooperation of all residents in preventing fire incidents and promoting environmental protection.
