BUTUAN CITY — The Department of Science and Technology-Caraga Regional Office partnered with social innovation firm Limitless Lab on Aug. 26 to lead nationwide artificial intelligence capacity-building for micro, small, and medium enterprises.

DOST-Caraga Regional Director Noel Ajoc and Limitless Lab founder and CEO Mary Joie Cruz signed the agreement during the opening ceremony of the Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week in Caraga.

Limitless Lab serves as the local implementing partner for the ASEAN Foundation’s AI for MSME Advancement in ASEAN program.

The initiative aims to build AI literacy by developing certified trainers and equipping small businesses with practical digital tools to improve productivity and operational resilience.

Under the regional AIM ASEAN framework, the ASEAN Foundation targets training 100,000 MSMEs across 10 member states, with a Philippine target of 17,500 enterprises by 2027.

Concurrently, the DOST aims to assist 10,000 small businesses nationwide over the next two years, with DOST-Caraga targeting 1,000 local enterprises by early next year.

"We are tasked by our Undersecretary for Regional Operations to lead the capability building of MSMEs that are partners of the DOST nationwide," Ajoc said, noting that the agency has already trained over 160 personnel to instruct local business owners.

Ajoc identified a lack of awareness as the primary barrier to AI adoption among small enterprises. Through the partnership, businesses will gain access to existing online tools and locally developed platforms, such as the Decentralized Intelligent Machine Exchange Repository created by the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute.

DIMER functions as a free digital repository, allowing entrepreneurs to integrate pre-built AI models without developing software from scratch.

Despite digital readiness challenges, Ajoc noted that an initial cohort of 250 trainees demonstrated strong interest among local entrepreneurs to adopt emerging technologies.

Today, Limitless Lab and DOST Caraga officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) during the opening ceremony of the DOST Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) Caraga, marking the start of our partnership to equip micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) with practical AI skills.

Through hands-on training, MSMEs will learn how to use AI for everyday business needs—from improving productivity and marketing to generating ideas, creating content, and making better-informed decisions.

Together, we’re making AI more accessible to Filipino entrepreneurs and helping build more AI-ready, innovative, and competitive MSMEs in Caraga.

LOOK: Our Founder and CEO, Joie Cruz, was at the ASEAN Youth Summit on Digital Resilience and Responsible Use of New Technologies last week, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Development - DSWD together with the National Youth Commission, under the Philippines’ ASEAN 2026 Chairship, held at the PICC.

She joined the panel titled “Innovations from the Margins,” moderated by UNDP Philippines, where she presented “Beyond the App: Designing AI Solutions that Communities Actually Need.”

Her message to young innovators across the region: the hardest part of building with AI isn’t the technology — it’s making sure you’re solving the right problem.

She shared how Limitless Lab designs human-centered AI projects with communities, not just for them, and why empathy, systems thinking, and genuine community participation are what separate tools that get used from tools that get abandoned.
