Surgical Endometriosis Therapy: Adhesion Prophylaxis as a Gamechanger for Fertility and Pain Reduction
Endometriosis resections are often the first step towards improving the quality of life and fertility of affected patients. However, postoperative adhesions can jeopardize these treatment goals. Two consecutive publications by Krämer et al. (2021 & 2023) provide important insights into how the risk of adhesions can be reduced and what this means for patients – with impressive results.
Publication 1: Adhesion prevention after endometriosis surgery (2021)
A randomized, controlled trial investigated how effectively the adhesion barrier 4DryField® PH can prevent postoperative adhesions. The results speak for themselves:
✅ 85% less adhesions and
✅ Significantly fewer affected areas (53%)
compared to the control group
But what does this reduction mean for patients in purely practical terms?
Publication 2: Long-term follow-up on pain & fertility (2023)
A one-year follow-up of the patients showed significant clinical improvements:
✅ Pregnancy rate almost tripled – a significant advantage for patients who want to have children after endometriosis resection
✅ Reduction of pain parameters (5 types of pain that can occur in the pelvis were examined, such as menstrual pain, pain independent of the cycle or pain when going to the toilet, etc.)
Why is this relevant?
The studies by Krämer et al. impressively show that adhesion barriers not only prevent adhesions, but can also help to improve the quality of life in terms of pain and fertility of patients
