When we think of paper, we often associate it with trees. But have you ever heard of paper made from palay?

Three innovative students from South Cotabato State College have done just that—transforming rice straws, the leftover vegetative parts of rice plants, into eco-friendly papers they call Palaypel. What makes their invention even more remarkable is that these papers can be planted directly into the soil because they’re embedded with seeds.

In Singapore, shopping malls have found a smart way to reuse what’s often wasted — condensation from their air-conditioning systems. Instead of letting this water simply drain away, the collected moisture is filtered and repurposed to irrigate plants inside and around the malls. This creates a continuous cycle where cooling the air also supports greenery, reducing the need for additional freshwater use.
The process works by capturing droplets that form on the cooling coils of air conditioners, which in Singapore’s humid climate can produce significant amounts of water daily. By channeling this into storage tanks, malls can maintain lush indoor gardens, rooftop plants, and even surrounding landscaping without drawing heavily on municipal supplies.

This practice not only conserves water but also promotes sustainability in a city known for its limited natural resources. It’s a small but impactful step that shows how urban spaces can integrate nature-friendly ideas into everyday operations, making air-conditioning — often seen as an energy and water drain — part of a greener solution.

In Singapore, advanced urban infrastructure is tackling the growing challenge of flash floods with the introduction of smart drains. These drainage systems are equipped with sensors that monitor rainfall intensity, water levels, and flow rates in real time. When heavy rain is detected, the smart drains automatically open their gates or adjust flow channels to direct excess water away from vulnerable areas, reducing the risk of urban flooding.
The system is linked to a central control network, allowing authorities to respond instantly to changing weather conditions. In some cases, the drains can work in coordination with detention tanks and flood barriers, creating a layered defense against sudden downpours. This automation not only protects streets and properties but also minimizes disruption to traffic and public services.

Singapore’s approach reflects its forward-thinking urban planning, where technology and sustainability go hand in hand. By preventing water from accumulating in low-lying areas, the smart drains help protect both infrastructure and the daily lives of residents. As climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events, such innovations could serve as a model for other flood-prone cities worldwide.
