SAME ASSESSMENT, DIFFERENT STRENGTHS: Are We Really Being Fair in the Workplace?
Imagine an elephant, a monkey, a penguin, a fish, and a dog taking the same examination. The instruction? "For a fair selection, everybody has to take the same exam. Please climb that tree."
The monkey succeeds. The others struggle.
Everyone received the same instruction and standard. But was the selection truly fair?
This illustration challenges how organizations recognize talent, measure performance, and develop people.
1. Equality Is Not Always Equity
Treating everyone identically does not guarantee fairness. Employees have different roles and competencies. Fairness means assessing people against relevant job requirements—not lowering standards.
2. Different Strengths Build Stronger Teams
Some excel in communication, others in analysis, creativity, planning, or ex*****on. Effective leaders recognize these strengths and align them toward shared objectives.
Great teams are not built by making everyone the same. They make different strengths work together.
3. Measure Performance, Not Personal Preferences
Are we recognizing measurable contributions or rewarding employees whose working styles resemble our own?
KPIs must reflect actual job requirements and meaningful outcomes—not visibility or personal preferences.
4. Develop Potential, Not Uniformity
Instead of asking, "Why can't this employee perform like everyone else?" consider:
"What does this employee do well, what does the role require, and how can we bridge the gap?"
Recognizing strengths does not eliminate accountability. It helps leaders develop competencies and maximize contributions.
A Challenge for Every Leader
Are you asking everyone to climb the same tree because climbing is essential to the job—or because that is how things have always been done?
A fair workplace maintains clear standards while recognizing different contributions to success.
Different strengths. Shared purpose. Collective excellence.
