Truly honored to have been invited to be one of the Speakers / Panel Members to the AI and Cybersecurity Leaders Summit ASEAN held last 6 August 2026 at Level 7 - Grand Suite Hilton Kuala Lumpur, 3 Jalan Stesen Sentral, Kuala Lumpur 50470, Malaysia hosted by Global Engage with the support of CyberSecurity Malaysia. I was part of the panel discussion on "Digital Sovereignty by Design: Architecting Compliant AI and Data Systems across ASEAN" together with Atul Kumar, Director, Data Security Council of India.

A key takeaway for me during the discussion is the realization that a country can truly say that they have data sovereignty if they truly have the power to control how personal data / personal information of their citizens (called data subjects under the Philippines Data Privacy Act of 2012) are processed and used for yhe purpose/s those were provided and I mentioned that having data centers where we could store all these personal data is an important step in achieving data sovereignty. I did qualify my answer during the panel discussion that I was not in any way endorsing the proposed Pax Silica project (although I still really need to study more about this project before I can make a definitive stand on this).

What a truly surreal experience to have attended the ASEAN Tech Summit Manila 2026 that took place last 28-29 July 2026 at Marriott Manila Grand Ballroom, Newport City, Pasay City through the personal invitation of sir Lito Villanueva. Although I was only able to attend the first day, it was great to hear the Opening Remarks from sir Lito himself, the message of President Bongbong Marcos as delivered by Department of Information and Communications Technology - Philippines Secretary Henry Aguda, the discussion on "Navigating ASEAN's Future Together: Energy Security and Strategic Resilience" by Stratbase Group Founder and CEO Prof. Victor Andres Dindo Manhit and the panel discussions and fireside chats that featured among others our very own Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center - CICC Executive Director Atty. Renato "Aboy" Paraiso, Deputy Executive Director Atty. Alvin M. Navarro, Better Internet PH Founder Mary Grace Mirandilla-Santos, Cybersecurity Council of the Philippines (CSCP) President Donald Patrick Lim, among others. The theme for this year's summit was "Building ASEAN's Digital Economy: Secure. Sustainable. Inclusive. Borderless."

The cybersecurity firm's latest Cyber Threat Landscape Report recorded 16,619 phishing attacks, 21 ransomware incidents and 255 data breaches nationwide between January and June.

The attacks exposed about 335 million records and 2.6 terabytes of data, while more than 19.2 million user credentials were compromised. Finance, hospitality, logistics, manufacturing and energy were among the hardest-hit industries.

I registered for the summit that took place from 30 June - 01 July 2026 at Marriott Manila, Resorts World Drive, Pasay City as a Delegate which was somewhat a new experience for me as I've been a fixture of this event as a Speaker, Panel Moderator and/or a Panel Member since 2022. Be that as it may, during the first day of the summit, I was requested by a good friend of mine, who happened to be the Moderator, to be part of his panel discussion on "Generative AI in Cyber Defense: Harnessing Innovation While Mitigating Emerging Risks" at the last minute. Having known that person and living up to our industry mantra of having each other's backs, I readily agreed. After the panel discussion I was approached by one participant / delegate and mentioned to me that it was by far the best discussion up until that time of the summit. Relative thereto, I received an email from the organizers thanking me for "stepping in at such short notice". Just thankful to our Lord God for guiding me during that panel discussion.
