Lawyers for former House Speaker Martin Romualdez announced Wednesday that he will apply for bail in his multi-billion-peso plunder case. Appearing via video link from the New Quezon City Jail wearing a detention facility shirt and seated in a wheelchair, Romualdez pleaded not guilty before the Sandiganbayan Third Division. While plunder is normally non-bailable, a court can grant it if the evidence against the accused is deemed weak, a matter that will be tested during upcoming bail hearings.
In addition to the bail request, the antigraft court ordered Romualdez to explain within 10 days why he should not be suspended from office while the trial is ongoing, a standard rule under the Anti-Plunder Act. Romualdez, along with former lawmaker Zaldy Co and two others, was ordered arrested on September 7 over allegations of pocketing P7.44 billion in kickbacks from government infrastructure and flood-control projects between 2022 and 2025. Following a brief hospital stay, Romualdez was transferred to the Quezon City jail.
